Weird Android GPRS Woes

I bought a new HTC Legend recently.
I have a Vodafone connection with GPRS activated.

All the widgets that require a data network like weather, twitter and the news DO not work with GPRS but work absolutely fine with WiFi

Note - I'm easily able to browse the internet using the default browser only (not with Opera Mini 5)

Other applications like Market and Google Maps do not work either.

I have enabled the mobile data and also enabled "always-on-data" too
I selected Vodafone Live as the default access point.
Anyone know the solution to this?

I am no longer a vodafone user myself, but last time I checked, Vodafone Live was wap only service. You will need Mobile internet service for proper data usage. Unlike Airtel's Rs.98 2GB Mobile plan which is truly full fledged EDGE data service, what u r using might be just wap service.

^ True. You need to subscribe to Vodafone Mobile Connect which is more expensive than your wired broadband connection last time I checked.

vodafone gprs schemes suck badly.

the most VFM service that work over android:

TATA DOCOMO (click over tariff)

48 bucks for 2GB monthly, 95 bucks for 6GB monthly.. no daily FUP. speeds vary from 100kbps-200kbps...the whole maharashtra is considered as local network over tata and charges if you cross the FUP are 50p per 1MB (lowest across all providers)

APN settings that work for android:

Connection Name: Anything you want

Access Point Name: TATA.DOCOMO.INTERNET

proxy settings are there but those are necessary only if you are using it over WAP apn (TATA.DOCOMO.DIVE.IN)

the wap apn does not work over android.

A fellow TE'ite has Vodaphone and curses it day-in and day-out coz it drives a huge dent into his pocket. Me on the other hand am merry with the 98/- Airtel GPRS pack activated :ohyeah:

For me, DOCOMO sucks too. No doubt it is cheap. But speeds are horrible. I can drive 8 km to my destination before Google maps loads. It also keeps getting disconnected, 3-4 times per hour. With Android (Spica), the solution for disconnection problem is to put it on flight mode for a while and then back to normal mode. On Nokia N73, no solution except reboot the phone.

With Airtel, speeds are slightly faster than DOCOMO. But at least it doesn't get disconnected.

This is for South Bangalore. From reading TE, I figure that Mumbai (and around) guys are happy with GPRS speeds. YMMV.

My Friend Is Facing Same Problem With His Spica & Vodafone GPRS Connection

It Never Gets Connected Although It Show The "E" Icon In The Notification Area.

Settings He's Using Is:

APN: portalnmms

Proxy: 10.10.1.100

Port: 9401

^^ those are only for Vodafone live content( vodafone live site, and MMS ). He will not get GPRS data connection with those settings.

He has to subscribe for mobile connect and use its settings for GPRS data.

What are you guys saying :O? Kindly do not confuse him between Vodafone Mobile Connect and Vodafone Live!

There are - Vodafone Live and Vodafone Mobile Connect. Vodafone Live and Mobile Connect are almost the same except that Mobile Connect HAD a larger data plan as at that time Vodafone Live didn't have any schemes and was quite expensive. Also Vodafone Live was restricted to Mobile Phone usage only despite Vodafone didn't make it very clear how they knew if a user was using a mobile phone or a PC+Phone as Modem.

If he has Vodafone Live, then thats more than enough! Everything should work perfectly. Third Party Applications, Widgets, Porn Sites, everything opens with my Vodafone Live! Please check your network settings on the Legend. Possibly all applications have not gotten permission to use GPRS. Another note: Vodafone Live isnt perfect everywhere, where I stay currently (Ahmedabad) Vodafone Live works PERFECTLY, however while on roaming in Mumbai I had several GPRS connectivity issues especially with the Sony Ericsson Facebook Application.

PS - Im using Vodafone Live with the 102 Unlimited Scheme (2GB FUP Per month, after that standard charges). Djmykey, you might want to recommend that to your friend if that scheme is available in his region.

^^ Check the plans, they are different for different circles.

That vodafone live used to work here too initially. Not anymore. Thats one of the reasons I ditched even my secondary vodafone connection and went for Airtel.

For Mumbai, Postpaid charges are aboslutely horrible.

Rs.500 per month with only 500MB free and after that. 10p/10kb.

And you had to activate mobile internet by sending MI to their toll free number and then call up customer care and change the plan accordingly.

Charges are same for Vodafone Live as well as Vodafone Mobile connect.

This is the main reason I discontinued my backup vodafone number as soon as airtel came out with Rs.98 2GB plan.

EDIT

Here are the charges for Mumbai Circle.

Guys i have the same problem with my spica, I live in Bangalore and i have a vodafone connection, I'm using the following settings

APN: portalnmms

Proxy: 10.10.1.100

Port: 9401

The "E" logo comes appears on the notification bar it also displays uplink symbol, But the down symbol never glows :(

I never had this problem in my SE meaning that vodafone live is active on my sim.

to be clear again.

vodafone Live (portalnmms) does not work over android (neither on iphone i guess)

:( :( I definitely cant change my network! It so sucks that bloody Vodafone GPRS wont work with widgets! Damn!

When will ever the mobile number portability ever come to India?!?

Well... I also have a second DoCoMo connection, but when I send the "Internet" message to 52270 or whatever they ask you to, I get an error message saying that the phone does not allow automatic settings and that I should call customer care. Anyone knows how to manually configure this?

If your setting has any proxy server/port configuration, then most probably its WAP gateway and due to its proxy configuration most of the services will not work like mail client, secured browsing(https). This is true for even symbion OS

Vodafone works flawlessly for me on my Legend. The phone automatically set it up and I didn't have to do a thing. However, it is ridiculously expensive. The only reason I'm not switching to another provider is because I can't afford to lose the number.

Widgets, Mail, Google Talk... everything works but I specifically asked for a Vodafone Mobile Connect plan at the store.

what hows that possible, he used the same settings on his SE P990i For GPRS. This is crazy their plans suck
