PC Peripherals Weird Buzzing sound from MX5021 sub.

Ahhh.........the adventures continue :D

Getting a irritating buzzing sound from the sub. Even when the speakers are switched off thru the control pod. The sound starts as soon as I plug the sub into the wall socket. It doesnt bother me during daytime, but at night its quite irritating.

Any bright ideas?
 
Probably the input wires seem to be leaking somewhere. Check for any breaks in the wire.
 
Is The sound coming from the speaker in the Sub, or is it an electrical buziing from one of the components

The latter seems most likely, since you say it stays on even when switched off from the controller, and is most likely the transformer which decided to let its core resonate to bother you or a leaky cap on the PS :P
 
Excellent. Now, what do I do about it?

Edit:- It must be electrical buzzing, as its quiet high-pitched and whinny. The sub speaker couldn't make such a sound.
 
Replace if under warranty...if not:

I don't have the MX5021, so can't really tell yuou how to open up the sub...but if you can, try localizing the problem to (what is most likely) the defctive component on the power supply...The transformer/Cap or any other edefctive part on the power supply section will be pretty easily replaceable by any local electrnics repair shop
 
try 1 thing. switch off all electrical components in the house and see if noise is still there. If its not it can be from the mains. Also does sound come even when sub not connected to pc?
 
in all probability,its a voltage prob.If possible, run the spkrs thru the UPS/stabilizer and see if it helps.
 
Yup, sound comes even if nothing is connected to the sub. And what do you mean by "switch off all electrical components in the house" ??

The transformer coil is vibrating @ 50 hz / sec.
in sync with mains AC frequency that produces the buzzing noise.

Get the transformer re-Varnished.
 
You want to DIY or get it done at any motor winding shop ??

anyways you will have to open the sub-woofer unit and disconnect the 4 ~5 wires from the transformer (make note of where they are connected first). unscrew the 2 or 4 screws holding the transformer to the body of the sub.

if you want to DIY then there are many articles about it on the net. google for it. (not recommended for you at this juncture ;) )

anyways to first find out if indeed it is the transformer coil which is responsible for the buzzing noise do this.
1) on any transformer there are two sets of wires. the primary (Input, which comes from the mains) and the secondary (out put of the transformer , which goes to the pcb)

2) disconnect the secondary wires ( the ones going from the transformer to the pcb). hopefully they would be socketed and not soldered.

now switch on the mains supply and carefully listen for any buzzing noise.

if the noise is present then it is confirmed that transformer is the culprit.

if No, then some other coil / component , down the line is responsible.

if possible open the sub and post detailed pics of the insides (NOT YUM YUM YUM as in ur signature ....hehe). we will try to help you virtually / remotely.
 
or you could replace the transformer altogether...Should not be more than a couple of hundred rupess...

Just check th eexact Voltage and Amperage ratings, and get a replacement from Lamington

No the cheap transformers will ruin the sound.
if indeed the transformer needs to be changed then a hi-quality transformer (preferably torroidal type) can be purchased and fitted with some modifications.

whats the rated output of these spks btw ...
 
yups what u get locally are cheap transformer.
what u'll see in the transformer is that it has some pastic coating over it and the core is well hidden. :P
post some pics this is getting interesting i wanna see how does the pcb looks too. :p

btw try it in a diff room and see if any luck.
deejay remember the apc ups and smps issue is tht due to ther transformer too? i was juss wonderin.
 
This again raises a question in my mind.. the quality of mx5021 build quality gone down or what with the reduction of price? :(
 
^^ sending it back to itdepot and having it form there again would cost you more than a good quality transformer for a 20 kg speaker setup. :(.
if u get warranty locally its all good u have bought it from itdepot right?
 
zhops we are discussing this hypothetically....a natural reaction to any problem....hehe

if you do not want to do DIY then take the unit to the nearest altec LANsing service centre in mumbai along with ur invoice copy and they would do the needful.

but just for our satisfaction (and if there is "No" warranty sticker on the sub-woofer, breaking of which will void the warranty) then try disconnecting the wire from the transformer to the pcb and post back ur observations.
if warranty "is" the issue then you better take it to the service centre.
