my comp recently is acting weird... these are the probs i have....

when XP boots up, After the screen that shows "Windows XP" with a progressive bar... the comp screen goes blank for some 15 - 20 secs and after that i get the blue login screen.. during this 15 secs there is constant hard disk read... this is kinda weird as last week it was ok...

then the start up takes more time than usual... moreover the XP startup sound breaks up...

sometimes when some process is goin on... the CPU is fully utilized.. the task manager says 100% CPU utlisation but the total CPU used by all the processes doesnt cross 5-10%... by this i mean than some process that is not listed in the task manager is utilizing the CPU...

the game load is slower and the game music breaks up during play....

what cud be the reason for this... i have antivirus with latest signature and ad-aware with latest signature. No virus or spywares detected when scanned...

running Trend micro online scan now... cud it be any trojan or virus or some programs like keyloggers that generally hides itself from task manager? pls help....

As soon as you login, open the task manager and search for the app which is taking max cpu time. Do post here about it.

If you want to see which app is taking how much time to load during boot use the Microsoft freeware Bootvis - this gives good info in a chart form.

In device manager check if the correct DMA is switched on for the drive.

Guys i tried using Bootvis... my sys takes 1:20 seconds to boot in... all the processes that are listed in bootvis start after the login screen... but the problem is the blank screen that comes for some 20 secs just after the progress bar screen... before my sys used to boot in 40 sec...

i also tried defragmenting the drive... no use... used online PCCillin virus scan... found a virus and removed it... even after that the problem exist...

the thing that catches my attention most is login sounds breaking when i login and yest when i tried AOE3, the startup sound of the game was breaking... at those times the harddisk read is high...

performing a full system scan using Seagates Sea tools to see for bad sectors...

If there are no bad sectors what cud the problem be due to?? trojens or keyloggers? is it better to format the drive?

Follow these steps to wake ur PC up:->
1) Start->Run->msconfig and look entries which are in startup tab. Remove those which are not needed.
2) Use a good tool like System Mechanic or Regseeker for compacting and maintaining ur registry. For 40% of computer problems, badly maintained registry is the reason.

Seagate Seatools completed... no bad sectors in the drive...

When i looked into the Event log i found entries telling that the ntfs file system is corrupt, but when i ran chkdsk there were no errors and the file system is fine...

But still windows startup sound breaks/crackling. When i play the sound directly it is fine. even divx movies is not smooth, and sounds crack... what could this problem be due to?

Is it better to repair windows? or is it better to format the sys and install xp fresh?

AMD Athlon XP 2600+

MSI KT4AV-L mobo

MSI GF4 Ti4400

Hynix 512MB RAM

Seagate 200GB baracuda

Philips PBDV1640P DVD writer

OS: Windows XP SP2

Last week when i was out of town the sys crashed twice... donno exactly why it crashed... but when i checked the event log found that ntfs file system may be corrupt... but chkdsk confirmed that there were no problems...

the system boots up properly and i am able to work, play games, browse without any probs... except for 2 probs.... one that the sound breaks/cracks when playing movie, windows startup, playin games... and the other being the blank screen that comes after windows xp logo screen that stays for 20 secs... and the sys feels like its a bit slow that before....

is repairing windows a soln? or anyother ways to check windows stability, performance?

EDIT: just checked now the device manager, in the resource tab for keyboard, there seems to be i/o conflict with motherboard resources... will this be a problem? how to change the i/o range of keyboard to solve this conflict?

did u try making another profile & then loggin in with it ?

also check this behaviour with ur LAN cable plugged out if ur on LAN
