Mine shows SATA as removable...be careful..and don't remove them..they aren't exactly hot swappable.. And this is not really a problem man..

infact i tried to do so. but luckily windows didnt allow to do so.

@nuke, AFAIK, only the nvidia ide drivers allow hot swapping. (don't know about intel boards).

@Sunilyo and dafreaking, hot swapping is one of the most useful feature of sata drives. And obviously, you cannot remove a hdd if you're running windows from it :P
I tried it recently while transferring a huge amount of data between a bunch of hdds. Saved me the trouble of shutting down my PC to swap hdds. However, while my hitachi worked flawlessly, my seagates didn't. Got a bsod when I removed them :P Maybe I'd put the jumper to sata1 position...not sure.

ya the segate hdd's sometimes seem to get stuck while hot swapping!! as in they dont show up in windows....

@zhopudey : wat sequence do u use for hot swapping...i.e while connecting power first n then data and while removing data first n then power?

it makes a diff...when the hdd's are connected u shld always remove the data cable first...coz if u remove the power cable before data cable u'll get the delayed write failed msg....u could loose data in that...

This is a good piece of info .. recently when I changed my mobo for old P4 PC .. i notice the same. I just left .. didnt want to break my head into it .. but its good to know. thanks TE guys.

Is there any setting in BIOS so that PC treat the drive in different way ? like normal IDE .. some time its annoying to see SATA as removable drive.

what about connecting an IDE device to the sata port using IDE to sata convertor? will that too display the devices as removable ???

Hey…

Since the SATA specs include hot swap as a feature, the behaviour you have is normal. Windows will not allow you to remove a bootable system volume so there's really no harm.

It’s normal with nVIDIA motherboards… nothing to worry about… I have a registry file to remove that icon from the taskbar… PM me your email… I’ll send it to you when I get back home from office…

OR

Do do it manually in registry:

Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata

Create a dword value named "DisableRemovable" without the quotes and set the value to 1

Restart the PC

:hap2: :hap2: :hap2:

My computer would just reboot if I tried "safely turning off for removal"..And i want running windows or any programs off it at that point of time

maybe the virtual memory/swap file was on that disk  ... btw i dont get hot swap with vista even with the latest drivers, works on xp though
