Western Digital 500GB Caviar Green SATA HDD Review

With the whole world going green, Western Digital has offered Eco-conscious users an
alternative with the Cavier Green hard drives.

Western Digital claims that this green series of hard drives use lesser power. Also they
are supposed to run cooler. This is done, in my opinion, to remove he excess power usage due to hard drive coolers.

The Packaging:-
There is nothing different from ny other drive on the market. This comes in a silver
conductive bag with a sachet of silicon gel in it, for keeping static electricity and
moisture at bay.

Now, lets get to business. The part where it matters.
The Benchmarking Tools Used:-
ATTO
PCMark Vantage x64
HD Tune Pro
Everest Disk Benchmark.

ATTO Benchmark Results

More is Better

HD Tune Benchmark Results
Read Benchmark:-
hd tune benchmark.png

The curve is sloping downward.. this is mainly due to the fact that read speed is fastest at the centre and slow at the ends.

File Benchmark:-
hd tune file benchmark.png

This benchmark is performed by writing and reading files to a disk.
The read speed is quite high at latter ends is quite good. It is normal for the write speed to lag.
Health Info:-

Everest Disk Benchmark:-

Read suite:-
everest read benchmark.png

Begin stands for areas closer to the centre,
End stands for ends closer to the ends of the disk
Middle is for anything in-between.

Linear Read
everest linear read benchmark.png

The results are astounding.
Summary and Conclusion
With an average write speed of 70 MB/s this hard disk is pretty neat.
HDD idle temp comparison845.png

Temperatures at Idle is just 36C with an ambient of 30C is really prooving the point of being a ECO and COOL drive.
Pros:-
Price is just Rs.1742 (inclusive of all taxes)
Speed is more than enough for simple storage and acceptable for some gaming.

Cons:-
NONE!

hope you enjoyed this review. and that it was helpful.

YESH!!! thats the reason!
see for the read heads to read the same amount of data at the ends, the distance traveled is more(you got this part right), so the time taken to read the same amount of data is more!!

this concentric circle thing was even the same for floppies! even though the outer tracks are bigger, they still contain the same amount of data as the smaller near-center tracks. this is because since the formatting is done at constant speed, the angular velocity has to stay the same and hence this happens. true fact that if you can slowly decrease the speed as the reading is done from the outer circles, we would be able to store a lot more data, and speed would be almost uniform.

seagate hdd tune.png

thats for seagate barracuda i have.
you can see the drops ?? thats due to the the head changing the track.

^i am not convinced about it though.
I was told that the platter density is constant throughout.
And that the hard disk unlike the cd/dvd prefers writing data from the edges to the centre.
I may be wrong though just a referral link to your theory would satisfy me
:)
Update: i found out some searches which states that because the rpm on the disk is constant the time taken to read a circle is the same.
Hence the data on the edges read is more since more data can be stored on the edges than towards the centre.
Waiting for your reply . :)
Will post the links after you provide yours.

Thanks for review.

Though speed is not so matter for me but reliability is most important for me for HDD.

My 4 months old Seagate HDD went to service center 12 days ago but still no news.....:(

arent they supposed to give you a replacement on spot?
generally hdds are not very good once they have been opened up.

Nope, fcking Segate (Accel Frontline) told me they will repair my HDD even they will find BAD Sectors on it.....:@

They told me at the spot when I was submitting my HDD.

U can realize how is Seagate service in Kolkata from that.....:(

i sent my 3 year old WD 500 gb for RMA and got a brand new drive back, didn't go for segate due to reliability issues, also there is no door pickup.
