What cable to buy for my Dell U2311H

Hi guys,

I am using the monitor as described in the title.

Currently I am using VGA.

But only today did I realize that my monitor supports Display Port as well.

Can anybody tell me which cable to buy to connect my nVidia GTX 970 with this monitor?

I no longer want to use VGA.

Should I buy a HDMI cable?

Is it backwards compatible with Display port.

I also have a Nintendo switch lying around.

Is it possible to connect that to this monitor?

That would be sweet as then I would be able to play Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild in my room instead of the living room.

The Nintendo Switch came with a HDMI cable.

Would that work?

Should I wait for HDMI 2.1 specification to be released and buy that cable instead?

Are these cables cheap?

What is the difference between Display port and HDMI?

Thanking you in advance,
Cheers!,

hdmi to dvi will lose audio to monitor. another problem could be cable might not be bidirectional and works only in one way. example if you have display port to hdmi cable and cable works only from dp to hdmi, then if you connect it backwards - hdmi on gpu side and dp part of cable to monitor, it will not work since internally the cable is terminated differently.

there are hdmi to display port adapters. if you want you can buy one of those and see if they work. i have no idea about apple proprietary connectors and how they work.

since all the cables are almost same price, better to get dvi - dvi or display port - display port cable.

any of these should work.
