I have 5000 rupees in hand(Living in Chennai/India).

Initially had a 8600 GT(Mercury) which i purchased some one and a half years back and recently the fan came out(leg broken) and the concerned authorities said no replacement for physical damages.

So searched all over the internet for a better card(price to performance ratio).

Started with Ati series,

The Hd4670 model looks really cool. But i liked the one that comes from HIS.

" HIS HD 4670 ICEQ TURBO 512MB(128 bit) PCI-E"

I couldn find any place inside India to purchase it and nearest place is Karachi, Pakistan.

And i couldn understand how come there is a lot of difference when purchasing online with diff currencies,

example this model is quoted 79 dollars Max everywhere, but when i went to 20north.com which actually puts prices in rupees, quoted it around 4800 rupees which is a big difference.

These are my Pc specifications :

I just wanna know if i get a good graphic card, will i have bottleneck problems ?

Processor : Intel Pentium 4 Cpu 3.00 GHz, 1 core(s), 2 Logical Processors

Motherboard : ASRock FSB160

G31 M-S DDR2 800

Dual Channel

RAM : 2GB DDR2

SMPS : Model - ATX P4

DC MAX O/P 550W

HARD DISK : 500 GB - Seagate (Barracuda 7200.12).

And a 15" LCD monitor.

When i purchased 8600 GT 2 years back i wasnt sure abt any specifications.Just bought for fun :D.

Now i have 5000 rupees with me and i can add not more than 200 or 400 rupees to it.

What graphic card can/should i buy ?

Please share your opinions.

you could get a 9800gt for 5.5k , only problem is whether our power supply can handle it
So what should i do now to check whether 9800 GT is compatible to my psu ?

My Smps is ATX P4 and max o/p is 550 Watts

Please post a pic of the 8600GT and the broken fan. :)

If your 8600GT works and only fan is broken, you can buy replacement fan and fit it yourself or asked some experienced person to do it for you.

Someone may have one off some older card or may even have a cheapo replacement gpu cooler. :)

Its a mercury made card. The fan is small and magnetic, i never knew the leg is broken. But whenever i insert the card my never starts, i mean it doesnt start at all.But the moment i remove the card pc works tremendously fine.
So as of now using the inbuilt vga supports, but am definitely considering upgrading my graphic card.
Now am clueless whether the card is compatible with my pc specs.
Price range - Around 5000 Rupees but not more than 5400 rupees.
My first choice was HIS HD 4670 ICEQ turbo but is it possible to get either 9600GT or 9800GT for 5400 Rupees ?
And also the HIS models arent available in India.
Really really confused.

Mate with a 15" monitor, I really don't think you should be looking at anything more than a 4670, unless you're planning to upgrade your monitor anytime soon. My suggestion would be to go ahead and get a sapphire hd 4670 for around 4.2k-4.4k, uses less power than 9800gt, so your PSU shouldn't be a problem and also is more than enough for your needs. :hap2:

Yes am, not planning to upgrade my monitor soon, so i will stick to HD 4670.
My dilemma is that 9600GT comes under similar price range and i wanted the best card to be bought within my price range.

But will 9600 GT work in my Pc specs ?

Whats the deal with Monitosize/resolution, Psu's and graphic card compatibility ?

And also where is the sapphire model available for 4.2k,
I heard its around 4750 plus taxes in chennai.

If u know any places please PM me(in and around Tamil Nadu)

4670 and 9600GT are very similar in performance, with 4670 using lesser power. Also 9600GT requires a Pci-e power connector if I'm not wrong. So not knowing the quality of your power supply, I would recommend 4670 as it gives almost the same performance as 9600gt and uses less power.

As for your question, since your 15" monitor would be running at 1024x768 or similar resolution, these cards are more than enough to play games at this resolution with decent settings. It's not that you can't use a very powerful card with your monitor, but it's a waste since a lower end card will perform just as well. However, as the resolution goes higher for bigger monitors, you'll need more powerful cards to play games with decent settings. As the cards go higher, so do their power requirement and hence they need a good quality branded power supply for safe operation.

For prices of 4670, check out this link

Sapphire HD 4670 512MB DDR-III [HDMI] ? Lynx-The Electronics & Computer Superstore

You may PM a few TE dealers here to get the best quote on the card if you're ok with buying online. As for local stores in TN goes, I've no idea, wait for other TN members to reply. :)

Yeah, u are correct. How to determine the quality/details of my Psu ?
Thanks for the tip on resolutions, Now am using the Vga support and it says 1024 x 768 as recommended and max i can go is 1600 x 1200.
So, HD 4670 it is.
<For Tamilnadu members here, PM me if you know any stores(reliable and cheap) and if there is any possibility of getting the HIS ICEQ TURBO model in India.>

There would be a sticker on your psu which mentions the output power on individual voltage rails and the peak power rating. If possible, take a picture of the sticker on the psu and post it here. Members here would then be able to tell you if your psu is of a good quality branded one or a generic psu.

get a Zotac 9600GT ECO Edition 512MB GDDR3 @ 5k
OR
Palit HD4670 SUPER 512MB GDDR3 @ 4.6k

The problem is where can i get them ?
I am not ready to buy it online, and i live in India/Tamilnadu.
Any ideas ?
The 9600 Gt model comes with a 6pin to 4 pin converter right ?
My smps has only 4 pin o/p.

I think i uploaded it correctly. My smps specs.

And here are the pictures of my 8600GT.

Story:

All of a sudden my pc dint work at all, checked the smps and ups and all, so opened the cabinet and i saw the fan of the graphic card seperated from the card and the card was a lil bit hot.

So i thought the fan broke, and try to insert it again and perfectly matched(magnets), i thought the thing would work, but my pc was as idle as it can be.So removed the card and then tried to start my pc, and it started and till now it works really fine.

Is it because my card over heated and the fan leg melted ?

But if thats so, why dint my pc run ? Is it because there is a faulty card inserted and my motherboard automatically detects it ?

I talked to Nvidia authorities and explained that my fan came out, and they replied me "The leg is broken and its a physical damage, so no replacement".

Now am fixed on buying a good card(atleast better than 8600GT), but i have a 15 inch monitor for crying out loud.

So basically i donno whether i will see the difference at ell !

Your PSU has only 15A on the +12V rail which means approx 15x12=180W on the +12V rail and hence the total continuous output of the PSU is only close to 280-300W, it is not a 550W PSU as you think.

IMO, running even a 4670 might be risky with your PSU, though wait for others to reply. It would be great if you can spend some cash, around 2k for an entry level PSU and then buy a 4670 or 9600gt, or even a GPU cooler for your existing 8600gt if it works and only the fan is the problem.

Did you try using your PC with the 8600gt inserted and a different PSU?

dude, where do you live in TN,if you are in chennai head to ritchie's,take a qoute from delta, mahavirs, and sethia infotech, then go other shops and bargain hard using the quotes you already got, they will surely reduce the price..

I own 4670 1gig,and it does handle most of my games at all set to max..on a 19 incher..

Its a great VFM card. :D

BTW get the sapphire one, better cooling

You might wanna considering upgrading your computer, that CPU was a part of one Intel's worst series. Even the cheapest AMD proccy will outperform that CPU by a huge margin. For the time being I suggest a second hand card till you can upgrade the system. No point in spending 5k on your current setup.
