Could we have a discussion on the fps (frames per second) really need for smooth gaming - dissected by genres

I know for a fact that different genres of games give smooth, stutterless gameplay at different resolutions
for eg: Firstperon shooters would need much higher fps than say an RTS

I read somewhere RTS games would just need 20-25 fps for smooth & stutterless gameplay

If some guys know what is that value for diff genre gaming, it will be helpful for everyone...hence this thread..

So far, from what i have experienced fps games like crysis require 20-25 frames per second for smooth gameplay whereas rts games require ~15 fps.

Try playing a multiplayer game of Warcraft 3 at 15fps before saying that 15fps is enough for RTS games ;).

60fps @ 60Hz. is the minimum you need for the best possible gaming experience in any genre.
You get absolutely dreamy mouse and controller feel if you can manage to stay at 60fps @ 60Hz. all the time.

And the first person to say that the human eye can't perceive more than 30fps gets a week long ban :P.

i think 30 fps minimum is what a gamer needs for smooth gameplay ..any genre and anything extra is good ofc !

Hey told you..Its from my experience cos i have finished crysis with very high settings where i was getting an average of 23 fps.In world in conflict i get about 16 frames and it is quite smooth.I havent played Warcraft3.That is why i had said "rts games like wic"..

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE DOTA ALLSTARS VERSION.
WELL THAT DOESNT QUALIFY AS RTS ITS SORT OF BETWEEN RTS AND FPS.:)

You can use Fraps to check your in game FPS.

Anything above 30FPS will give a smooth gameplay, and anything above 60 is a overkill , exactly why games like GTA , UT3 have a frame limiter option. :)

different games need different fps for smooth gameplay. you CANNOT jus set down limits. also different ppl need differnet fps. one person might be comfy with 60fps while antoher might demand a 100.

crysis is an example where even though the framerate might be low the gameplay experience can be very satisfyingly smooth coz.

yes i know there will be ppl saying that beyond a limit we cant percieve the difference, but there still are pro gamers like ashr who still play q3 at 800*600 so that they get to play at 100hz refresh rates with about 100fps..

Also, the most important spec in FPS that one should look for is MINIMUM FPS one can attain. coz it'll be hte min value which'll define the amount of stuttering and jerkiness that happens.

@memnon. ALL games have a frame rate limiter. Its called Vertical Sync

Dude, I played and completed the Single Player mode on UT3 playing at an average frame-rate of 6 FPS!! Amazing huh? Yea, I kinda like the series. I also played online , managed to get a few frags.

@Stalker, the vertical sync limits the frame rates depending on the Hz of a monitor say if the monitor is 60hz then only 60Frames are rendered per second.

But games like GTA has an inbuilt frame limiters which limits the frame to the FPS set, say even if ur monitor is 60hz GTA III, GTA Vicecity will only render 30FPS if u keep the frame limiter on, and GTA San Andreas at 25FPS.

so that is the fundamental difference, please do correct me if im wrong :)

well those game that require pricision will require high "minimus FPS"....or high constant fps ...but games genre like rts here pricision are not a major concern and movement around map is done by keyboard shortcuts[if wanna play with good style..that is] ...then they might require less minimus fps ....but genre like FPS require morefps to enjoy....tps or action-adventure might require a little less then fps-genre!

^ That's because of bugs in the game code rather than having to absolutely need 125fps to play Q3A.

Play Q3A with 125fps at 85Hz. and then play it with 85fps at 85Hz. v-sync'ed.
The latter will feel downright dreamy.

Playing with v-sync is the only correct way to play games :).
And I think that is why ashr is looking for a 120Hz. CRT in the market section ;).

q3 with the CPMA mod has been FPS independent for a long time now. you jump the same distance no matter what your FPS is. that being said, you'd ideally want more than atleast 75fps for first person shooter games. Quake 4 had an engine limit at 60fps and this sucked so badly that people managed to get id to release a patch that unlocked this. the community finally settled at 90fps as a limit.

there's nothing like "overkill" when it comes to frames per second... the higher the better... no matter what the genre is. sure you can play stuff like NFS and GTA at a stable 30FPS but that doesn't mean getting 60+ fps in the same games wont make it smoother. the most important thing is to keep it stable... fps fluctuation can really affect your aim in first person shooters.
