What is an Octroi charge ????

hey,

Just received my clip+ and the courier guy charged me 150 rs as octroi charge..

Do we have to pay that ?? he said that every item gets charged ??? :(

But two days ago i recieved stuff from the itwares and i did not have to pay any charge then..

its like my ebay coupon was a total waste.. :@

^^^depends on where you were in your mentioned 3 locations space. Correct me if I am wrong but I think Mumbai has Octroi while Thane/Navi Mumbai doesnt.

I live in Thane and the item was shipped from delhi via dtdc..

But the 2nd item frm itwares was not charged..

Anybody can explain how the octroi charging workss ?

Thane does have octroi, some areas in mumbai have started already & still none for navi mumbai

Depends on their mood too, you were lucky, these things never go unnoticed, especially when it comes to money

Thats why i order everything at my office address. It comes under grampanchayat (thats what i was told :ashamed:) and hence octroi is never charged.

Earlier when dell had a specific octroi charge depending on location, in the bill, friends used to tell me to order laptops for them as there was no octroi here and they would save like 1k or more.

there is nothing about mood.

mumbai and thane are under same district (supposedly, as sometimes mumbai is considered as a different district now)

OCTROI is applicable for any item that has been brought into the district for consumption.

that i dont know but octroi and cess is not applicable when goods travel(are sold) from mumbai to thane/navi mumbai.. whilest cess is charged if goods are to be sent to mumbai from navi mumbai and thane... that is. talking about commercial transfers. no idea if octroi is charged when good are to be sold to mumbai from navi mumbai and thane.

as for the district issue.. im not so sure but there are controversies and mostly related to navi mumbai as it lies under thane despite of being a part of mumbai (mumbai sub-urb). supposedly navi mumbai will be (or maybe already) is a different district.. but then part of navi mumbai (kharghar) is already a part of raigadh district.. another controversy.. BEST was previously banned in areas beyond CBD, now BEST is allowed beyond CBD with a compromise to allow NMMT in mumbai areas. but all this is not part of this discussion so i guess that's it about it.

i dont have any source to back this up, just some general information gathered here in there time by time as well all do socially.

DTDC are liars & cheaters, each & every shipment come via them to me, I found they charge as per their will & not charged Directly by Octroi Agency, when I ask them why you are charging without receipt, the guy's each time said "Octrio walla charge for WHOLE consignment & we charge in parts as per package". While the actual Octoi was Rs. 8.50/- they charge me Rs.30/- saying take it or leave it we will send back the pack.

Even when I provide them within mumbai city address they refuse to reach me saying "Address Not Found" & threatened that if didn't collect iteam before 8 pm than need to collect it from HO (Andheri.)

Cess is not charged when the item is sent but on the Purchasing invoice (paid by the dealer directly during ta returns on his purchase invoices). Cess is sort of a replacement for Octroi in Navi mumbai, where instead of teh usual 5-6% octoi which many people just skip, a compulsory cess payment has to be made during return filings.

AFAIK , even though Navi Mumbai lies in the thane district, it is mumbai and thane that lie under the same tax district. Octroi is not charged when sent between 2 places in mumbai or thane, but when it enters these areas. Or as madnav correctly posted

Nowadays the Octroi officials are under a lot of flak and hence have become very very strict. Earlier it was a 10-20% chance that a small courier shipment sent to mumbai will attract octroi, but now the chances are very high.

I bought iPod nano few months ago.

had to pay around 300 as octroi - they almost recovered the discount I got using HDFC coupon :(

(I live in Pune)
 
octroi shall not be applicable on products marked as gift and maybe also declared of value below some designated amount (i think it is 1000)

but in that case neither can you claim more than 1000 in case if you are willing to insure your shipment.

the efforts and tricks used in dodging these charges can back fire if some bad courier companies want to.

Anything ship to you, if your city come under Octro zone it attracts Octroi. If it's without bill than they will judge the price (most of time nearly 2-3 times more than mkt. value)

I Even paid octrio for mouse send for RMA.

No argument buddy, you must requires to pay Octro... no excuses... if you do something MORE than your shipment may stuck with.... & ... lot of hassle ....

It depends on the size of the package, if it is bulky, they will charge octroi whether the bill is attached or not,no matter it is a gift or something.
I am from thane too.
Saved octroi in some occassions on gift packed stuff bought from ebay. try to get stuff gift packed & rest is your luck
 
^ AFAIK Octroi is charged in Maharashtra state,it isn't charged here in M.P. at any city..

Lemme tell you that these guyz are like craps last year i bought a G.Card from PrimeABGB for 10,500/- & had to pay 500/- for Octroi charge at Kalyan Station.

but,this doesn't end there. After i paid octroi & left the place station guyz chased me on their motorbike & stopped me at Ulhasnagar & then again they started asking for octroi..

i was like WTF but he said that octroi that i paid was for Kalyan & this is going to be for Ulhasnagar.

fortunately my relative had political approach so that mess got sorted but later he told me that the Govt. doesn't employ people & manage octroi dept. instead they release a tender like auction.

bidders quote their respective amounts in for one year contract & then if they win the auction they collect whatever octroi they can & it's their own money.(this happens atleast for Kalyan & Ulhasnagar,i'm not sure about other places)
