What is this registered post?

Recently I wen to the post office for sending an item which I wanted to sell. The guy at the post office said that this cannot be sent via speedpost and it will be sent via Registered Post, I was sending a CD weighting 46 gm to some district in West Bengal and he charged me Rs 35. Now I have a few questions about this Registered Post as I used it for the first time in my life:


1) Is registered post cheaper than speedpost and how is the service when compared to speedpost?


2) Is it true that the price range remains same till 500gm for a product?

Registered mail was always cheaper then SpeedPost. But service depends on many factors. For sending stuff to metros & state capitals SpeedPost may use Air Shipping while registered mail always goes through trains. If the article is sent to a small town then it may take equal time for both services...

Speed post service is limited to certain areas of the country (although pretty much most of the country is covered by speed post). Registered post has no such geographic limitations. You can send a registered post to any remote village in the remotest part of the country.

Both need to be signed for by the receiving party, and both can be tracked.

Speed post obviously promises faster delivery.

Speed post is slightly more costly than registered post.

With regard to your q.no.2, yes, there are weight slabs for charges.

I think in another decade at least, people will forget this.Already teens who have been exposed only to phones and ipods for music ask what does rewinding mean.

Once upon a time, when only POs were the way to send stuff:

1. Normal mail : Depended on luck.
2. Registered Post : Would get there, you would get a receipt back.
3. Speed Post : Same as [2] but quicker.
4. Telegram : Cryptic, but very expensive.
