Hey guyz,

Am planning to try out linux, plz suggest me after reading the requirements :)

1.Should have support for standard h/w (have 1900XT, Creative X-fi).

2.Should have good looks :P, something which beats vista and similar to those of Apple's OS X.

3.Should support messengers (MSN, Yahoo or any other alternative).

4. Should be able to support torrent client ( prefer Azureus)

5.Should be stable (system will be crunching)

Thats it i guess :P

and plz let me know the partition size i should create for linux. Can it be dual booted with Vista :P

I would suggest Ubuntu 7.04 for you. I have been using it for 2-3 months now. It's rock solid with no issues. Here are some details:

1) It has a restricted driver manager that automatically downloads and installs Nvidia/ATi graphics drivers.

2) Looks are awesome. 3D desktop works by default on most hardware. You can customize the desktop using various themes, so you can get Vista or Mac looks.

3) You can use Gaim or Pidgin multi-protocol messenger. I am currently using GTalk using Pidgin messenger.

4) I use Azureus on my Ubuntu machine with no issues at all.

5) Using it 2-3 months (Since it was launched): Looks pretty stable to me

Minimum partition size should be around 5 GB as you can install newer software and updates. Anything above 5 GB will be better. Swap size should be twice the size of ur RAM.

I hope this helps!

Since you are using a ATI card, better forget 3D desktop stuff (maybe at least till year end). ATI drivers are crappy. Other than this issue, Ubuntu seems to be a good start.

If possible try out Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSuse and then decide which is better for you. Use each of them for at least a week so that you get an idea on how you go about maintaining things. Once you do that, you will get an idea of whats good for you in the long run.

^^ Nice answer :) Get Ubuntu with KDe and Gnome both :D .But there are lack of drivers as far as ATI is concerned .. well you can install Drivers using Restricted Driver Manager or use Envy Script ..

3. Pidgin/Gaim ftw :D Multiple Id's at the same time :D

4. Azureus is there too in Linux :D

5. Gnome is too good and easy to configure or KDe for Professional looks and WIndows Like atmosphere :)

5..Stable .. :| Eh ? Linux is the most stable OS .. No crash nothing :)

20 GB max for File System . cause you need to install applications at regular interval of time :D Also as far as dual boot its very simple :P Install Windows 1'st then Linux ;) You can change too but that will require some steps to save Grub Loader in Boot Loader Option wlse you will lose direct link to Linux :S That's typical leave that install Windows then Linux ;) CHeck Dodger Guide :D Triple Boot Will healp you for sure ;)

Happy Tuxing :D and any help ask :P

 ... WHy so.. U can find any application that you need in Linux :D No need to run Windows Applications in Linux .. If you really need to run try this :) Wine 0.9.40: Runs windows applications in Linux.and far as games are concerned Linux can run many Games using Cedega in Windowed Mode

Hope it helps :P

Linux fans have already replied with good info..but as a ubuntu spoiler I wud suggest Fedora Core 7 :)

For torrent I use the utorrent clone "Ktorrent"

For those 3D effects with ATI you may want to see this walkthorugh :)

FedoraForum.org - View Single Post - Howto for fglrx (Ati driver) , XGL and Compiz / Beryl

For OS X like docks and side bar goodies I use "kiba-dock" and "screenlets"

For games there's thread started by darky in "open Source" section and a quick link from digg:

Linux Gamers' Game List

^ROFL. And Cedaga is not free I guess.

Wine should suffice, I was able to run CSS on 800*600 at a decent 40fps (With no sound) on my 6600gt using Wine, that was like 6 months back, I assume the driver support must have become pretty good by now and considering that u have a 1900XT you can easily run games at a decent resolution using Wine.
