thanks!
Here you go :)

@ Darth :- Yep Cedega is not free.. it cost nearly $19 which is way lesser than High end games :P and ya Linux drivers have released for ATI but nVIDIA has better support they keep on releasing new drivers @ regular interval of time :ohyeah:

^^ Nice answer :) Get Ubuntu with KDe and Gnome both :D .But there are lack of drivers as far as ATI is concerned .. well you can install Drivers using Restricted Driver Manager or use Envy Script ..

3. Pidgin/Gaim ftw :D Multiple Id's at the same time :D
4. Azureus is there too in Linux :D
5. Gnome is too good and easy to configure or KDe for Professional looks and WIndows Like atmosphere :)
5..Stable .. :| Eh ? Linux is the most stable OS .. No crash nothing :)

20 GB max for File System . cause you need to install applications at regular interval of time :D Also as far as dual boot its very simple :P Install Windows 1'st then Linux ;) You can change too but that will require some steps to save Grub Loader in Boot Loader Option wlse you will lose direct link to Linux :S That's typical leave that install Windows then Linux ;) CHeck Dodger Guide :D Triple Boot Will healp you for sure ;)

Happy Tuxing :D and any help ask :P

OT,

That post is smiley heaven!

thanks a ton darky :D and whats that gdesklets or screenlets :P

In KDE screenshot am using Super Karumba :D which is just like gdesklets.. and in Gnome am using gdesklets :) Screenlets needs Berly and on my old system did not have enough power to run that :(

@Saiyan Gnome/ubuntu pimping Guide :D The Ultimate Ubuntu Customization Guide | Ubuntu Customization Guide « Tux Enclave. [WIth full Berly Compiz and other stuff ;)]

Awesome screenshots there @Darky!!!
BTW, r u using KDE 4.0 beta in the first screenshot? and what r using for gadgets? Is it screenlets? or Gnome Deskjets?
I have downloaded and installed KDE 4.0 beta, will try running it 2night.

But guys, what about X-Fi as required by OP, Linux dosen't have support for X-fi yet, or has it :S

@ el33t its Karamba my bad :P @ montylee Those are Karamba desklets SuperKaramba and that is KDE 2.5.6 not Beta 1 :( My download limits are full can't do anything :( :S The desklets showing KDE version :hap2:

Code:
sudo apt-get install superkaramba

Those are better than gdesklets but the main problem is that most of the desklets are for System Monitor :S Well I would always prefer Screenlets over any of em :)

@Hitman :- Pretty unsure abt that :S You can ask more in Ubuntu forums :) Well I find this by simple search :P Soundcard Support

1.Should have support for standard h/w (have 1900XT, Creative X-fi).

2.Should have good looks , something which beats vista and similar to those of Apple's OS X.

3.Should support messengers (MSN, Yahoo or any other alternative).

4. Should be able to support torrent client ( prefer Azureus)

5.Should be stable (system will be crunching)

Pretty much any popular version of Linux will support all of these things. Think of Linux as modular OS, you install the software you want as you need it. Although there are many basic distinctions between Linux Distro's you can pretty much find versions of the same software for almost any popular distribution.

And unlike windows installers, Linux uses package managers like apt or yum to install software. These package managers will not install software for which you do not have correct dependencies.

It is a better idea to use a distribution that is more popular, therefore, you will have more community support, and it will be easier to troubleshoot for someone that is newer to these os's.

Some of the more popular ones

Ubuntu/Fedora/Suse/Gentoo/Mandriva/Debian/Mepis/Slackware/FreeBSD

Quite a lot of of these distributions have the availability of using a liveCD, so it is a good idea to download these distro's and run them from cd to test them and see which ones you like. In fact, you can even install many of them onto a flash drive and then boot directly into them, these are both really good ways of testing before you decide.

If there is a Linux driver available for one distro, it is pretty much available for all of them, if there is not a pre-packaged version of the driver, it can be built/compiled from the source files (in most cases) pretty easily.

Getting your hands dirty, is a must with this OS, yes it can be pretty simple in terms of pre-configuration, but do not think for a minute that you will not have to dig in and learn. The community support for most of these popular distributions, are incredible, and there is always a guru out there that is more than happy to help with questions. In most cases just going to the distro support forums, or using google will find your answer for you, and in most cases someone else has already had the same question as you.

Good luck, it a really rewarding when you have it sorted out, and I think you will find it well worth the effort :hap2:

Linux seriously sucks ...i mean wtf is with the problem of some hardware or the other not working on it ?

I tried Ubuntu a few days back and couldn't find a suitable driver that would run WLAN on my laptop and it was draining battery life faster than if I used my laptop as a room heater.

Hell...one of my friends couldn't get his keyboard running properly.

No offense ..but what kind of a moron would want to run Linux if he/she isn't using his/her machine as a web or a network server ?

I can understand your pain ..but linux has improved alot since i started using it from RH7.

theres lot of free support for distros like ubuntu and fedora(check out a sticky thread started by Darky in "open source" if u haven't). If some unfortunate hardware doesn't work you may ask for hep on those support forums for that specific distro.

As for your WLAN did u try ndiswrapper amd what about Powertop if ur kernel >= 2.6.21

well i can also say that wtf there is a spyware or virus on windows :D

nowadays I'm busy installing Linux on my friends(win lovers) machines after i showed them amazing stuff like compiz-fusion :P

sheesh.....and the debate goes on...peace

i cames accross this one on digg i guess lolz

oh that's rich... what a joke ;) someone should post that in the Linux hall of fame of Windows jokes. Thanks for pointing it out, a good laugh to start my day :)

I also can understand how difficult this can be for someone starting out. My advice as with anything like this, is to do a little research before you jump into it. There are usually work arounds with most popular hardware, and I have to say, that Windows can also be a real b**ch to get drivers working properly too, and just as daunting to a newbie :)

Thanks a lot artfulDodger and others :)

Downloaded ubuntu 7.4, will try it this weekend :D Need to buy a CD first lol.

I have been using different versions, distros and kernels for linux for the past 10+ years... since I was a kid (6th std)!! Have contributed a lot of code and bug reports to different distros over time....

Since those days I have hated the linux installation... although its improved, not close to windows at being foolproof!! Installing softwares and dependencies still has a lot to improve... try upgrading ur kernel and u'll know!! The ease of use is still not there... in the sense u have lot of ways to do the same thing, and can be confusing to starters (mind you...some ppl call it freedom others call it a pain). People who call linux stable...mayb correct when they say linux is stable, but then they mayb talking about linux as a kernel, and not as a distro!! Gnome/KDE and other desktop managers, nautilus, koffice... many more things do crash on different machines in different scenarios (no Windows comparison here..), but I really wouldnt call linux distros as stable as I would like it to be!! Hardware support still sucks and hardware vendors dont make as good drivers for linux as they make for windows.

But with all the above mentioned flaws from the linux world, u have to understand that it's your usage thats gonna make it better. Its an inspiration to open-source stuff (GPLv3 is not part of this discussion)... You can learn a lot about OS design (but for that therz always Minix3). So I would suggest you to install a more newbie linux like openSuSE 10.2 or Ubuntu 7.04 and tinker with it like I have with 40% time on Linux all these years. And dont just use it... after sometime start contributing back with some code.

PS: I would suggest that you also try Minix3 after you've become used to linux. Then after sometime contribute to Minix world. IMO its the most stable OS and any future OS should be like Minix, coz as hardware gets faster, we dont need a performance OS, but a stable OS!!
