Got this message on sms. It looks like it's asking WhatsApp money?

I got one of those data entry chat on WA and reported it. I doubt anything happens since the company itself is scummy to begin with. These scammers are like family to it.

I've been getting those over the past few weeks too. You also see ads for this kind of work in the last few years with smiling people making money from home.

Must have lured quite a few people who lost jobs during the pandemic and were desperate.

Yeah got many of these in last couple of months along with a few others which says
Aapki KBC ki latterry lagi hai... Lol all on what's app
And all the KBC related frauds originates from numbers from Pakistan

You can use SMS Organizer from the play store. It has a surprisingly good spam filter.

Surprising because it's from Microsoft and Outlook's spam filter is absolutely useless.
It is good but it just moves what it identifies as spam or promotion SMS to a separate tab. If you really want to block it, then it is a manual process. I had submitted feedback to them on adding the ability to export/import the blocklist that you build over time, but nothing happened.

I wonder what people do to get their contact info leaked in such a way that they get such scam SMS/Whatsapp messages a lot... I barely get them. I can't recall the last time I got such scam attempt messages anywhere (except email spam folder).

You are probably lucky. I also don't get a lot of them, but I can't say I don't get them at all. These days you have to give your phone number every where. You go to a Macdonalds and they ask your phone number for billing. You register online, they compulsorily ask your phone number and most will verify with OTP so you don't just type something there. Just go and try checking insurance premium even on direct insurer's website (ex. HDFC), you'll have to verify your phone number just to see the premium amount.

How do you even prevent your phone number from leaking in such an environment?

TBH I've done almost all of that and yet to get such level of spam/scam attempts. I may be lucky as you say but the only thing I've not done yet is give out my number on random websites (be it genuine) for insurance rate comparison etc.

The message app on OP5T had a good blocker. Been searching for a similar one for my S20 FE

I also get spam from the bank to use UPI and I don't trust it either

How does it work? is it taking info from other oneplus users or just uses regular expressions to block ranges of numbers
IIRC It had the option to mark as Spam then any subsequent sms from that sending house was not displayed in inbox. Similar to mailbox i guess. It also had a spam protection option. let me check and update here
