hey guys :)
a friend of mine is super confused.. he has a budget of 300 pounds in the uk and doesn't know what to buy..
2x 4890 for 300 pounds
2x gtx 260 core 216 for 300 pounds
or a 4870x2 for 240 pounds
this is on a core i7 920 and a 24 inch 1920x1200 monitor.. ?
any suggestions guys ?
cheers and thanks a lot in advance :)

Where are u able to get a 4870x2 for 240 pounds?

Anyways,

a GTX 275 is enuf for 1920x1200 res. else a GTX 285 is a pretty nice solution

hello

for the 4870 x2 its a limited time offer from xfx in the uk i think ..

also he has a budget of 300 pounds max sir.. so a gtx 285 does not make sense.. cause it costs 300 pounds itself and all the three configs i listed above have a better price/performance factor sir

thats why he isn't thinking about a gtx 285..

he wanted a gtx 295 but cant afford it so he wants the next best config.

he also sent me the following review

techPowerUp :: AMD Radeon HD 4890 CrossFire Review :: Page 1 / 29

cheers everyone :)

@toolius:

Oh thats nice! :)

i checked on google n the cheapest i saw ws 4870x2 for 300 pounds.

but i dint recommend it coz of ATI Driver issues with 4870x2 (but seeing ur signature it seems these issues have been solved - 2 x 4870x2 :O )

Ok then XFX 4870x2 is the Best VFM of the 3 deals u suggested.

This , but if he is from India he should buy it from here itself . UK prices are generally more than Indian prices

hello again bro :)

well i have not had any major issues with my config.. ii got really lucky :)

And yes bro you are correct about shady drivers...catalyst 9.2 , 9.3and 9.4 were problematic but 9.5 works very very well with 2 x 4870x2's.. :)

Most of the problems with the drivers go away if you do a fresh format/install sir.

but its a pain to reinstall windows just to install fresh drivers...so i used to roll back to what worked..

9.1 was good so i kept rolling back to it after 9.2, 9.3 and 9.4.

Catalyst 9.5 is just as good though :)

cheers bro :)

P.s Mohit Buddy .. i would go if i was there .. lol its not my lucky day LOL LOL

But the 2x gtx 260 on Sli is the best config right????

Better than the gtx 295....

But i dont know if it comes under 300 pounds....

Provided he has an Sli mobo...

I'm surprised you guys didnt notice that option...

No its not the best. GTX 295 has got Two GTX 275 in SLI, so it beats GTX 260 SLI.

Could you actually get 2 HD4890s for under 300 quid? If so, get those by all means. Minus the microstuttering observed with ATI cards in crossfire, this's a safe bet for a while. Assuming your friend has a beefy PSU to run these power-hogging babies. Oh and a good enclosure with decent cooling. :P

hey sir gannu :)

yeah he is getting 2 4890 's for 300 quid...and its the same cost for a gtx 260 sli config as well..

he also can get a 4870x2 for 240 quid..

he was wondering what config will deliver the highest FPS .. in games as well as for benchmarks and what config is the best in terms of price/performance?

i told him to get a gtx 285 but he said that 1 gtx 285 will cost him 300 quid and he can get 2 hd 4890's for that much.

so he was asking me if 1 gtx 285 is better than 2 hd 4890's in CF ?

power is not a problem.. he has a corsair 1000 watt so he is pretty safe...

cheers guys and thanks for all the help :)

Thats something new.....

Since when did gtx 295 started including gtx 275 twin cores???

FYI gtx 295 was launched long before gtx 275... and at that time it was 2 downclocked gtx 260's put in a single board....

I dunno if they have changed the boards design now... but IMHO gtx 260 Sli is the best...

equal to the Gtx 295. and much better if you overclock...

Anywway its better than the GTX 280 by the table i posted in the previous post...

yes GTX 295 is 2 x GTX 275 or u can say GTX 275 is half of GTX 295 with higher clocks , 295 has 240 x 2 stream processors and 896mb vram per core . 260 sli is not equal to 295 at stock . even when both oced to max 295 wins .

260 SLi is 5-10% slower than GTX 295. but beats 4870 X2 by huge margin in 6 out 7 games tested @ anandtech.

Value for money wise GTS 250 SLi is best bang for buck now :P Surprisingly its so close GTX 260 SLi, 4870 CF or even GTX 295. GTS 250 SLi will cost 200$ or 15k INR, WOW.

GTS 250 has best scaling in SLi, allmost 190% performance boost.
