I am planning to get a new UPS as the one I had already is no longer working (got it several years back). I really just went along with the dealers recommendation at that time.

So I was wondering what we need to look out for when we get a UPS (Watts/Input VA/Output VA...etc.)? and what all these mean.

Any info in this regard would be great.
TIA

look out for a UPS which can switch off your PC wen da power goes off...APC has it in its 650 VA model....also check for UPS wch can do cold starts :)

^^^+1.. Requirements please... :)

Models to look out for will be APC, HP, Powersafe...

Phew... didn't knew that.. More information please, any model no. specific you know ?

Well tats supported by most of them..

Requires a mean of connectivity b/w the pc and ups via Serial(Old ones) or USB...

Use the supplied s/w with the UPS (APC has powerchute) and set it.. Done..

ALL APC UPS' have the auto-shutdown feature..

^^^ yup thats called Universal application shut down. This program saves active data files first, before closing all applications and shutting down the operating system, to preserve all data regardless of the last time it was saved

see first look for ur req as oders suggested...anyhow the following terms will help u ....
Battery alerts. Most units have an audible signal, as well as a small light, to alert the user when power disturbances occur or when the battery is running low.

Cold start. This function allows you to use the UPS as a stand-alone power source without an AC connection, usually for a limited time.

Hot-swappable batteries. This feature allows you to change batteries while the UPS is in operation.

Run-time. The length of time the UPS will run (usually several minutes) to give you or the UPS time to close down computers and peripherals.

Transfer time. The length of time, usually measured in milliseconds, it takes for the UPS to take over the power operation of your equipment and switch to battery power.

Universal application shut down. already talked abt dat..

User-replaceable batteries: These easy-to-switch batteries eliminate the need to take your UPS to a dealer for servicing. An average battery lasts three years

finnaly the VA or volt ampere rating...its the amt of apparent power the ups can deliver....

compare ur choices on the basis of the above mentioned...

APC 650Va shud be less than 3.5k;

The 800 BR IN costs around 5.3k..

Not B'lore prices tho... Shud be +/-100 to 150 bucks maxx... :)
