Also, I suppose the monitor will come with a service tag. Since I'm not buying direct from Dell, do I need to register the service tag with Dell in my name before I can claim warranty?

I think it would be better if u cleared your warranty doubts with the retailer itself.pretty sure smc will be glad to help
 
Maybe a little off topic. Try to get someone who works in Dell. Dell employees get good discounts on dell purchases. otherwise it will be difficult to get the monitor below 25k.
