I mean, really if someone is gonna use the image for commercial purpose. he/she won't have much effort in removing watermark, (unless its really obstructing the image, which again will make the photo ugly ) why don't people use digital copyright instead?

it really bugs me when i see noobs with dslr , posting photos ordinary photos on facebook. XXX photography Splashed over the image.

bonus : plus other of his/her friends commenting which camera he/she used. and I am like mega facepalm.

its done by people who think they are so good that they need to protect their photos
and now a day , everyone got a " :MY NAME: Photography"

Well, as long as it's on the corners and not obtrusive, it's good, it's their identity on the photograph.

Why, havn't u seen artists sign their paintings ever ?

In the age of "ram naam japna paraya maal apna" people feel the need to add their signature in whatever way possible, but again overdoing it will not look cool either.

Its their photos, they can do whatever the hell they want with it. Make them ugly, plaster them with their names, copyright info or anything else.
Its their work, they have basic right to present it as they wish.
And whats wrong with it. It is actually helpful sometimes. I came across a artwork somewhere online and only because of the watermark I was able to trace the original artist by spending 10 minutes on google and another 10 seconds to message him on twitter to get some custom work done from him even though the image was actually copied from his daviantart page without his permission by someone else. Its a useful tool.

Watermarking is good way to protect photos and also let viewer know who took the photo.

However, at the moment I dont watermark my photos while posting in flickr etc as I dont feel they are good enough to be stolen :P
But, I put a little watermark while posting them on FB as I had personally encountered people who download them and post on their behalf in fb, telling people that they had taken the photo :D
while watermarking I make sure, it is not hindering the main subject, but also so placed that could not be easily removed my cropping or cloning

Facebook its a mess..:p i have seen lot of incidents..ppl copying images and claiming as they took it..even know some incidents of freinds who's pics used for commercial purpose without them knowing:)..IMO..As far u shoot in Raw and u got the file kept safe in ur hand...u r safe for claiming in any copyright dispute...cheers

whats the point of watermarking , people can crop the watermarked part and use the rest of the pic anyways right ?
