I have the following configuration.

P4 2.66 intel pentium d processor
1gb DDR1 400 ram
200gb+500GB Hdd
6600 graphic card.
LG DVD writer.
creative 7.1 audigy sound card.
OS:XP Sp2
Antivirus: PC tool antivirus,Threat fire .

in addition to that i have about 4 cabinet cooling fans.

I have taken a frontec SMPS of 420W(I believe) about 5 months back.

Now from the past 15 days my machine is hanging very regularly. It do not respond at all.I have to restart it using the restart button. Some times the SMPS goes very hot.

Also some time the power comes in to mother board, but the system does not get on.when I power it on, the LEDs glow for a second and stops. Is it the prob with my SMPS?
Some one please help. Is there any tool to identify the prob?

best bet here is to get a smps from a friend and replace and check the same.....if your motherboard has onboard video u might want to disconnect the 6600 gfx card + one hdd + the dvd writer + sound card and try and see what happens when u run the pc barebones.....if alls fine when u run it that way then its the smps for sure.

is it hanging regularly or getting shut down?...

about system not starting...does it happen when restarting after shutting down or does it happen when freshly starting (computer in cool state)

1)check fans are working
2) check the temp in bios....whether it is raising
3) try running without graphics card(if mobo supports), soundcard, additonal hdd and drive..that ll minimize power requirmnet...check if problem persisits...then add one component at a time and c if it couses the same
4) keep the cabinet open...incase it is not able to push the hot air out
