Have you started planning about it or have you given some thought? When do you want to retire? at 35? at 45? at 50? at 65?

Do you have some specific goals, like buying a home, etc before you want to leave your 9-5 job?

Or once you achieve financial independence, would like to leave your boring job and do something which you were always passionate about and not to worry about money at all?

So, whats your idea of retirement?

Yes, big goals

In my own bed, at the age of 80 with a belly full of wine and a girl's mouth around my ****.

as said by peter dinklage but isn't that everyone's dream? :D

I hate retirement as I fear money will exhaust in no time even if I have tons of that in FD, savings or in investments. So the idea itself gives me nightmares.

Still when retiring I would like to have a small house of my own and a car or two with ample of money saved and invested in safe ways which 'll keep giving returns to my wife and kids after me. Would like to tour the world and visit my dream destinations and meet my overseas friends there. :)

Why would one not like the idea of retirement ?? IMO it is the part of life when you would have substantial savings, periodically returning investments and zero liabilities. One can quit the rat race ( and I am not saying one can't do that earlier ) and pursue what he/she wanted to do without thinking about the salary/money involved.

Am I missing something here ?

Well, I guess retirement would appeal more to people who are in a line of work which they don't like doing.
My dad will be retiring in September. And probably the thing he will miss most will be his work. My mom is a teacher and even during the short summer break she starts feeling bored and wants to get back to work. Having nothing to do all day, might seem good on paper but it for sure doesn't work in reality.
OTOH, for someone like me, I just love the concept of retirement. In fact, even right now I don't have to work much ( a couple of hours a week and that too from the comfort of my bed) but that is about to change as I am about to start my business venture. The only reason I am willing to put in 10-12 hr days into my business is so that I can retire early. If my business takes off as I see from the stats, I don't see myself working a day past 45. But the thing is, as I have heard from people, that once you become accustomed to working that much, it becomes very difficult to let go, especially if it is a business you have built yourself.
So who knows what I will feel like when I am 45. If I do retire then, I am pretty sure I will enter into politics soon after.

By retirement I mean letting go of things which you are currently doing for making ends meet. An elder person in my locality is running ngo at the age of 75. He is doing it because he loved it. And i dont think anyone can sit whole day without doing anything, even the laziest of the people (me :P) would soon get bored of sleeping and playing on PS3 and start looking for something to do.

I think you answered your own question.

Also by your definition, I am already retired.[emoji12][emoji16]

Do what I love, with the people whom I love.
1. good health
2. decent amount of money so that i dont have to check bank balance every now and then
3. Spacious house
4. Spending time with family and friends

@OP:

Couple of days back I was discussing the same with a friend. I want to earn enough so that I can actually start spending at 45 without holding back. No work all play after 45. Would like to save as much as I can by that time. I am 34 and done with the house. Don't have big wishes like a mansion or a Ferrari.

A decent enough german car with a vacation every six months or so is all I desire as of now when I am 45.

Sounds perfect Switch. Have something planned along the same lines. Vacations are already taken care of courtesy Club Mahindra and RCI plus air-tickets through credit card points.
I live in what is touted as one of the best cities in India, i.e. Chandigarh, and I am already sick of the traffic and the crowd. Within a year we are moving back to my village in HP. Unlike most villages in India, we get 24×7 electricity. We built a bungalow over there for 1/10th of the cost of a 2BHK in Chandigarh. We grow our own vegetables, rice and corn over there and my proposed Dairy Farm venture should take care of the little money we need for the rest of our needs.

^but job? will you be able to get same job in your village also?[DOUBLEPOST=1408884243][/DOUBLEPOST]^but job? will you be able to get same job in your village also?

No need for a job mate. I am starting a dairy farm with 50 cows. With conservative estimates, there is a monthly margin of around 3L a month just by selling the milk in nearby towns.
