I don't know about android, but on iOS the current requirement is iOS12 and newer, from 5 May 2025, only iOS 15.1 and newer will be supported. So basically any iPhone after the iPhone 6 and 6Plus, will be supported.

The articles stating iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, 1st SE, will not supported are wrong.

Sometimes we do not realize this but a large number of users (rural India) are still on much older versions of Android. This data is as of few days ago from one of the mobile apps with a million+ user base. Almost 3% of users are on an OS which was released more than 6 years ago. Its tempting to disregard them and expect them to upgrade coz building apps for older OS is a pain. For whatsapp the percentage may be even higher as it is probably the first app that gets installed by everyone these days.

By ending support for older devices, WhatsApp also encourages users to upgrade their phones. This helps them stay on current devices that are more likely to have up-to-date security, better performance, and access to new features.

Ha ha. Probably Android 4/5/6 OS phones. Thats like ancient phones. Who even has those now. Battery must have stopped charging years back on these devices.
Ahem, I am still using a Moto G(xt-1033) as my daily driver and it is working perfectly fine with a days battery and no physical damage or issues... i currently have apps running like WPS, Whatsapp, sharekhan , strava.. all on the default rom and regular phone usage yet it keeps chugging along faithfully:)..
