Heh i know, just stated it for comparison.

Anyway like the above 2 posts, the IPTV providers will be the first to rollout some sort of HD broadcasting.
I know for sure that even MTNL is considering offering some HR and HD content to its users.

well reliance will be the first to get HD channels but via its IPTV platform.there regular DTH pltaform will still take a while.the reliance iptv setopboxes for iptv have HDMI out and comes either with DVR(80gb hdd) or without DVR,also people having XBOX 360 can view iptv with a software update.

but it will be launched initaily only in mumbai around june.

y only in mumbai ?? there are ppl out of mumbai also who are waiting for HD content :(..

n wat was that Xbox thing??

testing ofcourse. A company wont fork out millions into building infrastructure until it does large scale testing at 1 place.
If it survives and succeeds in Mumbai that will insure their infrastructure is robust enough.

Same happened with MTNL, they first launched IPTV in Mumbai, then BSNL adopted IPTV nationwide. But for more than 6 months it was tested in Mumbai.

TATA Sky looks shitty on my Panasonic Viera 42 incher, just like how I expected it to. DVDs look bad too. Right now it's like the better your TV is, the worse the quality from those 2 sources will be as you will be able to see all the flaws in the picture more clearly than in older TVs. These 2 sources just do not have the resolution of your downloaded HD rips.

About comparing TATA Sky to DVD, the advertised 'DVD quality' is a very loose term. Have any of you ever tried encoding source footage of ~2 hours to fit an MPEG2 DVD? Your results will most likely be even worse than what you see on TATA Sky. The reason professionally authored DVDs (from Hollywood etc) look as good as they do is because they're done by trained professionals with the help of awesome encoding software like Scenarist. There's a lot of work and time involved in getting those to look so good like setting custom bit rates for individual scenes. There obviously won't be the same kind of work going into TATA Sky so it will look worse than your original DVD movies.

Our HD channels will take a while if you ask me. Our TV Productions have to switch to acquiring HD footage in the first place and I don't think most of them are shooting on HD cameras just yet.

Maverick, Indore is ****in village..dont even think something gonna come ovea there any soon than metro cities..

:P

FCUK ...!! in Reliance IPTV they are even talking about AC3 5.1 sound ... i jus asked for mpeg4 (x264) picture quality ..

man this is something real good.. thx for the info shashank

jus spoke to reliance iptv customer care,,

been abt a 2 weeks since they launched. they have 2 packages. one with a dvr box and one without the dvr box. the dvr box has a 80gig hdd.

they will be launching hd channels soon enough.

the non-dvr package comes for 4k upfront and a 350 buck monthly charge for '100 popular channels'.

the dvr package comes for 6.5k upfront and the same recurring charge.

the only catch here to me seems to be the fact that you need to have an existing wired reliance broadband connection..

DTH providers are not offering DVD quality pictures in India. Instead they offer DVD quality sound (not the read DVD sound, I dont this those kind of audio disks ,uncompressed DVD audio disks) and CD quality Video. And I felt TATASky is better than DishTV in picture quality. But it depends the channel also sometime.
Anyway waiting for HD broadcasting of NatGeo, Discovery etc.

There's something going on in this front... Insat 4B got a feed which says "Channel 8-1 HD" which although in MPEG-2 is supposed to be High Definition.. not sure to whom does this channel belong.. sarkari or otherwise but, from the looks of it, this might be a start of testing of HD content in India..

Here' alink to the FlySat Insat 3A/4B @ 93.5° East look for "Channel 8-1 HD" at the end of the list / page

^^I have seen that TP in other forum aswell and it is Sun Direct's.Hopefully they will launch atleast one HD channel soon.

As you know 1drop of water can make an ocean.

I doubt it's from Sun direct.. if they want to do it, they'll have it in mpeg-4 (since they already use it) and not in mpeg-2 .. My guess is, it's from DD direct.

just because its on the sattelite doesnt mean its for sun direct or DD direct it could be fo other countries, with the permission any service provider can downlink it.there are well over 6HD channels which are FTA and upto 16 HD channels that are pay channels ,but most of the pay channels are for other countries, which u can recieve if have there settop box and subscribe to them.
