By the time we get 2mbps connection, it would be meaningless as the world would have moved onto 20 mpbs connections and higher....and 2 mbps wouldnt mean a thing. Let me give an example to make things clear:
In late 90's having a 256kbps or 512 kbps connection was awesome. At that time the size of files was smaller, there was rarely any movie downloads, most people were downloading audio via Napster. Not everyone was into video gaming, there was no video streaming (or minimal) like UTube. At that time India was crawling with 56k modem connections with dowload rate of 5 KB.
Than came the 21st Century. People began to find meaningful ways to leverage the Internet. It became a daily chore of all people, from office to home. From writing an email to paying your bills. In multimedia too, you had streaming videos, movies on demand via internet, download video and audio, online gaming, remote desktop, remote backoffice operations to name a few. Bandwidth became essential. The west graduated from 512 kbps ADSL to a minimum of 2 mbps Unlimited connection as a start up. With many advanced countries going in the excess of 10 mpbs. So why was India to be left behind, we caught up with what the west had in the early 90's. ADSL connection of upto 256kbps, which has little use in this day an age. Our Internet experience is limited to what folks in west could do in the 90s. No streaming videos or UTube for us. Just centuries of wait for a DVD download (relatively speaking).
Dont worry we will get 2 mbps. But probably in 2010 by that time most in west would be sitting at 20 mbps. Well thats not bad, now is it? With Hi-Def format out there, we would be limited to download just divx or avi format whereas the rest of the world would be downloading hi-def blue ray media. We would have LCD TV's that support 1020p, but we wont have any media to play. The games of PS3 and Xbox 2 would require 20 gb or more with Hi-Def/Blue Ray format. The streaming video content on UTube and other sites would have been hi-def and we wouldnt have enough bandwidth to stream the content. We will be faster than what we are today, but still relatively slower than what the demand of bandwidth would be for applications at that time.
In other words as Indians we will always be playing catch and never be the pioneers in any field. The reason is simple? The mentality of our government and elected officials. We have barely qualified individuals who are more verse with caste and votebank of the people in their state than their education, sanition or other requirements. The dont care about technology unless there is money to be made in some deal. So why would the likes of them care that you cant stream video or have true broadband? You are not aam aadmi, people like us are just a minority and I dont think infrastructure or technology would ever be a voting issue. Nobody cares, and nor do the companies. Not just in technology but every sector. Which mobile operator has launched 3G in India? Which DTH company or channel has Hi-Def content? Do we have GPS enabled trucks, trains or cars... leave that do we even have readily available GPS maps? Many car audio companies dont even have their official shop in India? We dont even have a proper V6 car or a 250 cc bike....Cars that sell for 10 lakhs abroad cost 30 lakhs in India. Motherboards that cost 9k in US, are retailing for 15k in India....
The list goes on. Not to say that I am not a part of this. I am an Indian and in someway contribute to all this mess. We can keep dreaming and comparing ourselves to China, but reality is quite the contrary.
