Where to find and change the PIO/DMA mode?

I think my system has slowed down and could it be due to down grading of memory transfer mode of disk drives.

i checked all the settings but could not find the advanced settings, here is a screen shot

so why this happenes to me.

i ma using p-4 2.0 ghz on intel 845 gbev2 motherboard with 512 mb ram, i have one hdd and one odd, i have one cd rom lying around wanted to connect it and i found this problem.

i have licensed windows xp home fully updated.

virus / trojan / malware issue ruled out with helop of NOD32, spybot s & d, Adaware se, Spyware blaster.

can any enlighten me here. thanks in advance.

try defragmenting / moving stuff off your hard disk

the DMA modes are enabled in BIOS usually. what BIOS do you have ?

mine is an AMI bios

iirc i am using the award bios,

and right now i can not reboot and check into the bios settings as i do not have any ps2 board in my hand and i can not make pc respond to delete key as i have cordless kb which powers up after windows boot up.

will check and repost here.

go to
Device Manager->IDE Controller->[select controller]->properties
go to Advanced settings
you will see options for PIO mode / DMA mode.

if ur unable to set these do let me know

i have attached the screenshots of what you said and it does not have an advanced settings options.

Hii Madpal, happy new year....

do one thing, when you get a simple ps2 keyboard, enter the BIOS and set 'Default BIOS Settings' and then start your computer.....

after starting the computer, start internet but don't run any internet applications. then do these 2 -

1. from the Task Manager, try to find which EXE is most active....

2. go to dos-prompt, run 'netstat', see what are the connections showing and where they are connecting....

(it proofs any malware activities over the net without your knowledge)

post me the results.

do you have the intel application accelerator installed?
if yes then your dma settings are controlled by it and the normal DMA settings tab is not visible in advanced properties.
btw IAA always sets the DMA speeds to max supported

BTW, I too had a cordless keyboard, but it started before Windows... to enable that, you have to go into the BIOS and enable USB keyboard. After that, everything is cool.

If you have Nero , use Nero Infotool to find out about DMA/PIO modes on your drives

i noticed that appo yesterdy night and found that my hdd is set at dma-5 and odd at dma-3. infact it was a corrupted installation of IAA and i had to reinstall it.

i have installed only nero burning rom and image drive rest utilities i have not installed. so could not use it.

but as IAA was found to be culprit and i corrected it i have almost zeroed it on the problem could be due to cable cault somewhere which is preventing faster speeds.

will have to look for replacement.
