Storage Solutions Which 1TB HDD? Seagate 7200.12 | WD Green 64MB cache | WD Black 32MB

Hi all,

I want to buy a new HDD for animation/rendering works. Will run heavy demanding softwares like Maya, 3dsmax, photoshop on it.

Please share some performance graphs/values/information and also update me with the latest lowest prices of the following 3 HDDs:



1. Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB

2. WD caviar green 64MB cache 1TB (Got a quote of 3950 for WD green 32M, and 4150 for WD green 64M)

3. WD caviar black 32MB cache 1TB - Worth spending Rs.5500?

4. Any other suggestions?

Animation and rendering works demand a fast drive - get a WD Raptor 150GB if you can afford it. Else the 1001FALS 1TB - it's almost as fast as the Raptor minus the access times. I do not have graphs/values/information other than these - you may google them.

Need more input, specially between the 3 options.

Should i trust tom's hardware, bit-tech reviews ? IMO They show Seagate 7200.12 is by far the best value for money.

WD black beats seagate in random access time (6.25ms vs. 8.5ms)

Seagate beats WD black in avg. read/write (105MB/s vs. 85-90MB/s)

Seagte beats WD raptor 150GB in crysis load time but gets beaten by WD raptor 300GB.

So many more fields posting in seagate 7200.12's favour. See link in my previous post. (Tom's hardware)

hence its damn confusing. The only favour falling in WD black's court is the no. of fans it has on TE. Does that justify the Rs. 1300 price difference with Seagate 7200.12?

And WD green 32MB has been ruled out, but does the 64MB cache make a difference?

Ive googled alot, coudnt find a review (other than Tom's hardware) featuring WD black against 7200.12. Hence I've created a thread here.

go for 7200.12 no doubt ... its best HDD.. m using both WD black and 7200.12.. and 7200.12 is best...

Wow. Can you please post HD tune or HD tach values of both drives? Avg. read, Avg. write, Access time, Burst speed, etc.? :) Thanks, would help me and other TEians alot.

I have uesd the Seagate 7200.12 hdd and it is amazing, I dont hink you should pay any premium to WD as Seagate problems are a thing of the past.

7200.12 is value for money & a good HDD but its WD Black which is the performance champ.. hence cost more..

Get WD Black 1TB.. :)

I got myself the 1TB 7200.12 and its amazingly fast. I ve checked a WD Cavier Black 1TB myself last week. Did a HD tune bench and dunno why the seagate i got 2 days before is giving lot better performance score on the bench.

price difference is around 1.3~1.5k b/w those. Definitely not worth for such a price.. i mean the WD Black.

It wud ve been ok if it was sub 5k, but 5.5k is too much.

Also temps of the 7200.12 is always around 32~34c, while the black was always like 45~47c.

^If you still have access to both the drives, pl copy a file > 4GB to both the hard drives and post back the time taken. You'll know why the WD warrants a high price. ;)

Ball in court of 7200.12. WD caviar black is about to get kicked from my choice list.

Any comments about WD green 64MB cache?

IMO: the extra 32MB cache would be helpful when handling large files in photoshop or Maya. but the 5400rpm speed will let it down?

Can anyone with the WD black 1TB post the HD tune screenshot ? I dun have it with me now. It was akshay7g's HDD.

ill post the 7200.12's screenshot of HDtune read bench.

WD Black is the Performance beast. However Seagate 7200.12 is Value King. Decide yourself.

actually the seagate one shud perform better in this one for sure. Its the random access in which black ones lead.



check temps too: 33c :D

WD black gives about 90~92 MBps max in this test. Same is with sequential write tests.

Update------------

Check out this months Digit magazine. It has reviewed HDD & SSD. In real world tests, overall 7200.12 beats WD Black (both 1TB) except in Photoshop CS2 tests.

Ya... i got the same impression after seeing so much review, thats why ordered the 7200.12 2 weeks ago itself, despite all these hypes in TE in favor of the black's.

Being expensive doesn't always relate to being best performer. WD has onsite warranty and other pros against Seagate, though it isnt enuf to justify the 1.3k price diff b/w both.
