cool_boy4ua, I was just making a joke based on kranthi's sig, and apparently, he's got it. Why are you taking offense ?

When he talked about the speakers drivers , you made fun of him, and I was just saying that he was talking about drivers as in the parts of the loudspeaker , and not software drivers, as you seemed to have understood it.

You also were asking the OP to buy speakers just by looking at it , which certainly qualifies as bad advice. Maybe in the sub 500 rupee region, you can buy speakers without a second thought , but when you are willing to spend 3.5k for speakers, then I really insist that you listen to it before you buy, or get the advice of someone who has.

I certainly do not ridicule you for you sharing your experience.

But would you buy a car without test driving one ? Can you say some food is tasty just by looking at it ? Similarly, sound is a very personal choice, and your ears should be the judge, not your eyes, and I found you saying that it was otherwise a joke.

If you got good speakers by just looking at them, it is your luck, but please dont mislead others :)

i do have a sound card,

creative audigy 7.1

Hey, can you say Which audigy you have ?

there are a lot of variants, audigy value , audigy2 value, audigy SE, some of which have EAX 3/4 support , and some dont

if you are not sure , download http://audio.rightmark.org/downloads/rightmark-3dsound-2.3.exe

and you can determine from it if your card supports EAX 3 or 4 :)

Btw, can i post another alternative?

A center channel is not that important for gaming, I mean , duh, you certainly don't need a speaker to let you know whats in front of you.

Rears should be all you need. thats brings us down to a 4.1

to pare your budget down further, you can buy a new 2.1 , say an ATP3 for your fronts, and use your SBS for the rear. It is certainly do able , using two sets of stereo speakers for the front and back. check out superczar's home setup. Right now he has a kicka$$ phase tech speakers for fronts , and some aiwa music system for the rear. that way you get good sound from your front and surround ( which doesn't need high quality speakers) without spending too much cash

Even i have floor standers for the front , and satellites for the rear.

and you end up with a 4.2 speaker system ;) for 2.7k which will beat the $h1t out of any sub 4k 5.1 system !

That's some idea!!! Reppeddd!!!!

So, it does really provide a surround effect?? I've got an onboard Realtek 6.1 card. In the RightMark3DSound, it shows that EAX 3 n 4 are not available... Are these required for surround sound??:S
What is the basic (read cheapest :P ) card required for this to work?

The cheapest thing would be the soundblaster 24bit value. But the EAX enabled will cause pronounced CPU usage as it doesnot have onboard DSP. Also, for basic surround, EAX is not necessary.

The 4.2 route is one of the simplest to maintain and implement. :) I've had Altec Lansing ACS54 (4.1) for the front coupled with a old Cambridge Soundworks for the rear. I had 4 speakers in front and 2 in the rear with 2 subwoofers hidden away.

This was mainly done cuz the ACS54 had hardly any length to the cord and my old 2.1s were just rotting away. :)

As greenhorn has mentioned, it's damn easy to set them up and you would notice a very cool surround effect depending on how you set it up. All you need for a clean set up is> 2 plug points - one near your comp and one near the rear wall - otherwise you'll be running both your audio cable and your powerline from the front to the back, some neat cabling/wiring tools to clean up the mess. :)

I used to mount both speakers up high near my curtain-rods at the rear facing downwards and had the front 4 speakers setup at ear-level. It was great for movies. :D

I was using an ancient SBLive! (1999) model which is still in use, messing around a bit in Creative Soundmixer also helped. :D

EDIT: I'm trying to get a Dell Soundbar to fix up to my Dell 228WFP to act as a center channel. :D Its fun to mix and match speakers, although the true audiophile will tell u it's all about the right combination of speakers...but hey, am not trying to build a perfect system, am just messing around. :D :D

^^ Sounds really cool... I'm not an audiophile and need a basic setup without spending too much moolah.. I'm really getting interested in this setup...

You will get surround for movies (ie Ac3 ones) but not for games.

For surround gaming , you need a proper audigy- one with the EAX DSP chip- it should support EAX 3.0 or above. They might not be easily available. Dealers stock the audigy value which is just a rebadged soundblaster live 24 bit

hey thats a nice idea.

..but how can u give to audio inputs..to the sound card..there are only 3 connectors at the back of my onboard sound card..

ie > red(microphone) ..green(front) and blue (line in)

currently i connect my ATP 3 to the the green connector ...in 2.1 mode

..but in the soundmax audio setup wizard..when i select a 4.1/5.1 setup..

it changes the blue (line in) connector to surround.\rear .mode..

so does this mean ..that it is possible to use another set of my old 2.1 speakers..which are not that good ..but kind off ohk ohk and comparable to sb live from creative...

will this give a better effect while watching movies and playing games ??

or will it cause degraded sound quality cause of better speakers like ATP3 in front and not so good speakers as rear...

in short is such 4.2 setup possible on my soundmax onboard and will it do any good for watching movies and gaming ??

as far as music is concerned i will only use ATP3 in 2.1 mode..

just wanted to know cause if it will work then i will have to arrange for some extra wiring and stuff...if its worth the hassles ..

at the OP sorry for hijacking the thread...but couldn't resist asking greenhorn about this wonderful idea ..

Your line in can also work as a surround output. similarly mic in works as center/sub in 5.1 mode.

with an onboard , the difference will be there for movies with 5.1 sound(DVD's etc) and other surround sources.

Gaming , I'm not sure. both realtek and AD seem to have implemented some sort of EAX, but its not perfect yet, with Analog Devices one ( soundmax ) being the better one.

Try it out ;)

The sound that goes to the surround speakers doesn't need very good speakers. Just connect your ATP3 to the line in jack and set the output to 4.1 when you're watching a 5.1 movie. all you'll hear are some echoes etc. Nothing which needs an atp3. any old speaker, even ordinary stereo speakers will do :P
