I currently have Seagate ST3500410AS 500gb 7200rpm 16mb installed in my system, I have bought a new Seagate ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache .
Which one should I install my OS for best performance if I need to format my PC in future ?

500 GB one, but ideally, you could try a 80 GB SSD for better experience.

Edit: 1 TB one, overlooked the 32 MB cache

You guys are correct the 1 Tb hdd is way faster than my old 500gb it has double the cache.

Transfers within the same drive are like 35-40mbps for 500gb one while for the 1tb its 90-100mbps

Another great news the hard disk that I bought is actually ST31000524AS which is 6gbps. I know that everyone at least some of them are saying that the whole 6Gbps is a marketing ploy but when I connected my friends 3gbps variant the transfers were a bit slower.

I would go on 500GB. this is more than enough for the operating system.

1T for other files which would need faster file access.
