Which Camcoder ? Help me select one !

JVC, most people here do not buy JVC due to complete lack of support for them in India...Comparably specced JVC's are often available for a lower price than say Sony or Panasonic in the US and they make a good buy.....But in India, it is difficult to get service./support center JVC....

Ok, I think I understood what Superczar means ! You cannot transfer videos off DVD cams without burning the disc, but then the cams support DVD-RW's right ? Can somebody elaborate...

NO NO NO....

You can transfer movies/pics to the computer without finalising the DVd. all you have to do is install the software/drivers and connect the comp to the camera using USB.

I do it all the time.

I dunno..... I am wiondering why......

One thing is that the capacity is quite small... each DVD is only 30 mins. Dual SIDED(not Dual layered) DVDs are 30 + 30 = 60 mins.

So, if you really see abt that, the capacity is quite small and cannot be used for looong recordings..

EDIT: 30 mins at standard recording. Will be lesser at high quality and will be more at Long Play mode

Couple of reasons why I say that....
but first the Pros of a DVD handycam:
- You can burn the DVD right off the handycam ittself.....

Unfortunately, the Cons more than weigh this out (Also do not forget that any DV handycam will also allow you to burn the videos to a DVD )

The biggest con is since the videos are recorded in compressed MPEG2 format and not raw DV-Avi, editing the videos on even a high-end PC would be more than a tasking task (ugh!!!)for your PC

- Once the recording is done, the process of finalization on a DVD cam takes easily over 10 mins before it can be played back on a DVD player (Though do rememeber that the process of transferring and burning Videos to a DVD from a mini DV will take far longer)

I have tried editing a Mpeg2 video off a DVD handycam on my PC, and trust me, it is an extremely painful task....

However, if you feel you will be making only linear videos, and do not want to be bothered with the somewhat tedious process of transferring the DV avi's to the PC, editing, converting them to MPEG2 and burning them todiscs thereafter...then go ahead, choose a DVD cam.....

No, no ! I got it ! Lol, OMG only 60 mins ! WTF I need 80 mins recordings at one shot...

I guess MiniDV is the best option then, also superczar what is the starting price of 3CCD MiniDV cams ?

Wow ! Thanks so much man ! It looks like the best deals now left is the HC-42E from Sony and the Panasonic GS-75 which is 3CCD...

Now can anybody elaborate why theGS-75 (which is 3CCD) will give better performance than the HC-42E. I mean this is bugging but will 3CCD make a huge difference in videos ?

off course...

3CCD always make difference when it comes to recording..

you have 3 separate CCD for 3 colors and to make more sharp and clear picture.

i have lot of R&D in video cameras.

you will understand quality of video when you get it on big screen.
here in my office we have VC unit connected to 42" sharp.

you can clearly identify difference between sony and 3CCD panasonic one.

thats why i am telling you to buy 3CCD.
best quality.
just go for it.

Wow ! Thats a lot of stuff, thanks so much for the help...

So basically I should go for the PV-GS75 right ? But I wont be using it on a big screen, just on my comp, then will there be a difference between the GS-75 and HC-42E (I am a complete Sony freak) ?

Sorry for bugging you guys ;)

Edit : Ok, checked out the GS-75 and it looks convincing...
Here is a link GS-75 Available at JJ Mehta for 27k, is the price good ?

Also it has only 10x optical zoom...

JJ Mehta stocks Singapore bought items....You can get approx 15% lower prices in your local gray market.....You should be able to find GS 775 ~24K
However, JJ Mehta gives you 3 months dealer warranty...Take your pick....

BTW 3 CCD also means more CCD area...One of the biggest crib that knowledgeable camera users have with handycams of today is that CCD sizes are getting smaller with every succesive generation of cams....This translates into lowere video quality and poor low light performance....I thk GS-75 has 3 CCD's of 1/6 "" each compared to a single 1/6 (or is it 1/4) " CCD on the HC42

Ok, thats great news then :D ! So then I think I should finalise the GS-75...

Also what is the maximum size of MiniDV cassetes ? I mean how many mins of recording...
