Hey Guys..my brother will be coming back from UK this month and has asked about which card to buy...my config is:
AMD Phenom II X2 550
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H
Samsung SyncMaster 226BW monitor
2GB DDR2 800FSB RAM
BFG 7950GT Card
500GB SATA HDD
CollerMaster 500W SMPS (RS-500-PCAR-A3)

Need your help to select a card for me to buy...my main problem is the power supply available from my current SMPS..am not sure about how much power is available for me to use for the graphic tht i will be buying..my SMPS has one PCI-E connector..there are also a couple of molex connectors which are not in use for now..
All in all my confusion about the requirement and availability of power..need a good value for money card, coz nothing is future proof...
I havent zeroed down on the budget but max should be 10k..nything around 7k would be even better..

Sapphire HD4850 Dual Slot Version is the best bet for you as you would be gaming on 1680 resolution.
what exactly do u mean by Dual Slot?
will this be a good one for playing current games at high resolution or medium?

understood...nd could u also help me understand the basics of power here...how much power will this card be needing? nd how do i compare the same with my SMPS? This info will help me understand things better...coz I have been using Geforce 7950GT wid the same config nd was getting blue screen while playing Fallout 3..

Palit gts 250 will be perfect for you sells for around 8k..
Also if you extend your budget lil bit you could buy Palit GTX 260 Sonic for 10.5k.....the best vfm and quite future proof.
My preference would be later one....

CM500W Xtreme series PSU for GTX260 Sonic edition?? not at all a gud idea bro..though da card is gr8 n VFM product but for dis card u'll need a better PSU..
CM500W Xtreme series PSU can run GTS250 so my vote goes to GTS250 as its better den HD4850 :) Palit GTS250 is somewhere around 7.2-7.3k

PS : CM Xtreme series PSU rn't of very gud built so if u can den change ur PSU too for future up-gradation of ur GPU

GTS 250 draws power close to a GTX 260 Sp 216. And so is the HD 4870. SO all therr out of question.

4850 seems the best bet for ur PSU. Or an HD 4770.

With the 4770, u can oc the gpu and cpu w/o worrying bout PSU and get better performance than a non oced 4850 + X2 550. I dont think there is enuf room for ocing the cpu and 4850 with the current PSU.

GTS 250 will also run fine on it and 4850 uses more power than 250 :bleh:

even 4870 uses more power than GTX 260 oc

somethin wrong with the toms
check this:

and
http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/gtx260core216_091508220645/17390.png
and this:
HEXUS.net - Review :: Inno3D GeForce GTX 260 OC vs. Gigabyte Radeon HD 4870: the aftermath : Page - 12/13

all three says GTX 260 SP 216 draws same or bit more power than a 4870 at peak load[vice versa in idle]. 4850 is lot less.

that may be 65nm one.........the ground fact is dis- GTX 260 consumes significantly less power than a HD 4870 in idle and on par when under load......nvidia is ahead atleast in this segment........ GDDR5 memory in hd 4870 doesnt underclock well in 2d mode.....hence the higher power consumption.........gts 250 is a very gud choice as it has a redefined PCB which makes it power efficient unlike 9800GTX+ and it needs 1 PCI-E connector........ but for cm 500W HD4770 will be the best bet as when overclocked it beats both HD 4850 and GTS 250....

Go for HD 4850 its okay for ur psu.. Btw i guess 250GTS Draw power from 2 Six pin connectors....
checkd a few cards at newegg.com for reference, according to tht GTS250 uses one 6pin connector..

Am not into overclocking, atleast not for now..so wouldnt wanna take OCing into consideration for time being...

According to u guys would it better to buy a card under 10k for a current PSU or should I buy PSU+GPU nd raise the budget to 12k, coz thn I wuld be selling my PSU...

Mate,

I Think it is best for you to go for a 4850, I am running this card with same Psu ( Coolermaster 500 extreme power) with an overclocked cpu (E7200@3.6ghz) and it is running with out any issues.

guys GTS250 isn't a power hungry card..it require less power den its equivalent NV card(i.e 9800GTX+) n also frm HD4850

CM isn't a bad brand but only Xtreme series rn't of gud quality..its real power series is gud..Corsair is one of da best PSU maker..seasonic is almost equivalent to corsair..u need to chck no. of Amps on its 12V..for GTS250 u need around 32A(recommended) on its 12V

second option is a better option den u shld go wid GTS250(7.3k) + Corsair VX450W(4.2k)

My PSU shows 18a+18a=36a i.e. combined power from 12v1 nd 12v2...in that case my PSU shuld be able to handle GTS250...or did i get it wrong?

yaa as i said earlier too ur PSU can handle GTS250 :)..n y i was saying dat CM xtreme series isn't gud, cuz of its efficiency n built quality(wires..capacitors n awl)

looks like i need to decide between 4770, 4850 nd GTS250..

Any clue about whats the power requirement for 4850?nd also do u think tht its a good idea to get the card from UK, considering the regional warranty issue?
