Which dogs should i get??

Have a white pomeranian(not a true pomeranian but the big white ones available here). Was thinking about getting two more dogs. So which ones should i go for?

There are only two conditions:-

1) Should be cute lookin, intelligent and easy to train( this is important because my current dog doesn't listen to me. He only obeys me when i have a cake or cookie in my hand)
2) Should cope well with south indian (kerala) climate/conditions.

cute looking = cocker spaniels(not very intelligent though ) , beagles

cope well with climate = Labradors

Then there are a few other breeds you don't find in India or atleast not easily ...

Cocker spaniels need to be looked after carefully. When it comes to health issues, they are very fragile. I had 2 and none of them saw their 1st birthday due to genetic disorders. Any pure breed dog will need good constant care.

Whatever you do, dont buy the pups from the dog breeders. Get in touch with local reputed vet in your area and go through his clients.

How big is your home, how much time you will be able to give it? Do you have open garden or space around your home? Your choices will depend on these things. And there is nothing wrong in adopting a stray pup Toughest of em all

I live in a flat with a park nearby, is it necessary to have lotsa open space for having dogs? I have my heart set on a Golden Retriever, is that a good choice??Or the lack of open spaces makes it a bad choice??Which dogs to go for for People living in small (3 BHK) flats like me?

small dogs ONLY if no open spaces around. large dogs require lots f space/exercise.

get a Lab,

Respond well to training (esp fetching stuff.. its in their genes), have a great temperament, adapt well to new environs, their coat is virtually maintenance free...

An apartment is enough for it as long as it gets enough exercise...

Golden Retrievers need the right climate and all dogs enjoy wide open spaces...

Dogs in general need some kinda exercise !

But if your not so keen on a pedigree,why not head over to the nearest Blue Cross and adopt a stray ??? I've seen so many cute lil fellas there...

And strays are always the sturdiest(healthiest) as such..

Adapt to various environments,food types etc...

get a labrador some trained labradors dogs can even tell u what is 2+2 also i had seen a programme in NG which said labradors are the most intelligent.

Get a pug mate , now that has everything u want. if not get a boxer although lacking in the "cute" department its a great dog even if u dont train it properly

After hutch ad campaign, pug prices are thru the roof, increased 3-4 times, doesnt make sense getting one anymore.

I believe both boxers and daschunds are prone to more health problems as they get older (read somewhere :ashamed

On exercise, its a fact that larger dogs WILL need more exercise than a smaller dog, though of course ALL dogs need exercise. If you have a flat etc with not much open space, smaller dogs are recommended. Also, if you dont have a large outside space to keep a dog, look for dogs that have less fur/shed less Save you that much cleaning time

I got a miniature pom and trust me its the best breed for a person living in a high rise. She's barely a feet in height and 3 rooms are more than enough for her to exercise.

But they might be a little difficult to find.

Labradors are intelligent and learn stuff very easily.. and are cute and fun to have

but most of them get really fat and lazy after a while... especially if you have them in buildings

Exactly what happens to a dog if not properly exercised. Will cause problems later on. So get a big dog only if there is space to exercise it well.

Also, where are you located and do you have a budget? I have a relative who keeps lots of different dogs and sells the occasional pup if he has any. Hes not a dog breeder I would say, considering he breeds horses Hes got a couple of great danes, saint bernards etc etc But those will require a lot of care. It gets pretty hot in North India in summers so the the Saint Bernards get their own AC room to keep cool :bleh:

Great Danes are excellent dogs, if you can keep them. Look ferocious, are always as lovable as puppies and good with kids My cousin got one from the above guy. The only way he can stop a burglar is if the burglar dies of shock on looking at a huge 4 foot dog or if he licks the burglar to death :rofl: I always tell him no burglar will stand around to find out when he sees a dog that size coming towards him :bleh: Warning: They eat as much as 2-3 ppl tho!

Get a Pekingese.

I know nothing about dogs, but my friend got a pekingese a few weeks back and trust me its the cutest dog I have ever seen in my life. He is just like a cute baby. You will fall in love with him as soon as you lay your eyes on him. He is around 3-4 months old and naturally he has a low diet, my friend got him for 15K. Here are some of his pics:

Oh .... and one more thing, Pics just don't do him any justice. He looks 10 times better then in these pics. Trust me.

The way they fool around, and look at you with their longing eyes (when you are grabbing a treat the pooch covets) will totally melt your heart...A lab all the way :hap2:

BTW Don't pay heed to what I say, I have been dying to get a lab for the last 4 years

if you have the budget get a beagle or a jrt (jack russel terrier, which is not to be confused with a fox terrier) the jack russel is a very intelligent dog, seen in wishbone , eddie in frasier, jim carreys dog milo in the mask. and as ppl have said in this thread, avoid getting them from a breeder.
lastly as shripad said, strays make excellent pets, they have very few health problems due to hybrid vigour . i was set on getting a jrt as a second dog (i have a golden retriever) but now am planning on getting a stray pup
