Hi All..

So the local cable is not cutting for me. and saw some DTH services is few homes and was impressed.

I have no idea abt this.

Which service is the best?
Is is a one time payment or monthly? or yearly?
I need the local kerala channels, star, hbo, Discovery, discovery travel and living, and few sports channels..

is there any other worthwhile channels?

And can we share across other tv's?.. there are 2 at present. 1 LCD and 1 CRT. so can we switch between 16:9 and 4:3?

Any help appreciated.

Does the order means better from top to bottom?

What abt signal reception in these?..

do we experience any drop?

If i move can i just take it and fit it in my next home myself?

what is the total cost..say i take a basic pack.

can we keep adding any number of top ups or add on's?

during lightning or storm do we have to take any precautions?

my resonses are below.

signal of all major players is good and there will be no major differences. I have tata sky and can vouch it is very good.

you cant do it on your own as the dish needs to be aligned with the satellite direction. the engineers will come and do it even if you shift a number of times

what is the total cost..say i take a basic pack.

you should research on the company websites based on which channels you need and what packages and cost. these companies have various packages and different channels in different packages so you need to research which suits you the best.

yes you can do that. you can do it online also.

during lightning or storm do we have to take any precautions?

no. only in case of severe storm will there be a problem with the connection. moderate to heavy rain can have slight interference but not major drops in signal.

ahh...

thanks for the help mate..

and when u said the engineers come to install it again..its chargeable r8?

I just saw Sun HD at a store. Pretty good video quality since it supports Widescreen 16:9 mode which is perfect for my TV and it has 3 HD channels (discovery and 2 more AFAIK).

Dunno about other things, it looks good initially.

Well HD is not a priority....

think ill take a look at airtel and tata first.

no reliance. :|

1st installation is free for tata sky. re installation is 1000 Rs, not totally sure though.

Airtel and TATA Sky are very much similar.

While Airtel gives you better remote and sleek looking STB, TATA Sky has better support structure. Rest is just the same.

Also, Airtel has 20% bigger dish to have uninterrupted viewing during thunderstroms. Not sure if TATA changed anything on their dish.

If you book online, airtel costs much cheaper (999/- including installaiton) but it takes ages and some have complained that even after few weeks, nothing happened. TATA Sky too waives installation charges of 1000 bucks if you order online (pay 1500/-). But you better go to nearby agent and get it. will be installed in 48hrs max!

another thing is that the font of onscreen menu for Airtel is a bit smaller. Some said that it is bit tiny for 21" TV when one sits bit farther. Just check if once.

it's free only if you order online. if you go to agent, they charge 500-1000 bucks for installation.

I am quite happy with airtel dth.Video quality is top notch and no issue in signal reception. The software of the stb is also quite fast.I have been using mega pack which costs ard 310 bucks it includes all channels including sports channel like espn, star cricket in a single pack.

Well if its SD picture quality, big tv has the edge,i have both big tv and airtel, the big tv is the winner interms of PQ,but their C.C/support isn't good.

but b/w tata sky and airtel,i would go with TS,since thet have better A.S.S and mostly the first when it comes to new channel launches.

ooh..

so Tata sky is better?..

Anyways it seems airtel and tata is neck to neck. Wil go and talkt o some local shops and let me get a feel of things. :)

thanks for all the help.

basically i need some local malayalam channels for folks.. and few english for me. so need to keep the monthly to a 200~250.

yes. TATA Sky is the best among current crop of DTH providers and there is no denying that. It's the extras, design, price and brand that puts Airtel next to TATA Sky. Don't even think about Big,videocon,Sun. DishTV is okay and they are fast losing out to the current frontrunners.

Go for videocon d2h ... its got many channels and that just for 275/- incl for a month.Depending on the STB you take ... you will get some months of free viewing too.

Also the STB comes with a dvd player along with USB where you can play divx, xvid movies pretty easily.

If you want local stuff then opt for the 150/- per month package and add your desired malayalam(south package) which will come to around 200max not more...

Go to their website ... and check out.

Whatever you do dont go for dishtv ...its utter crap.

If you're looking for Malayalam channels, I'm using BigTV and I get all of the Malayalam channels (about 12-13 in total) in the Malayalam regional add on pack and most other Eng-Hindi, Sports channels and I pay around 250 per month. BigTV has got VFM packages and good PQ. But the BigTV logo is so irritating, it blocks view on certain news channels. Also, the software is pretty slow and buggy.

Airtel is probably the way to go, though do research on the number of Malayalam channels you get in their packs. TS is still on mpeg-2 even though they might migrate to mpeg-4 in the future. I would say, go for Airtel as it's a clear winner as of now in the DTH space.

Just saw the videocon packages webpage.. Impressive no for channels for just 275rs(South Diamond pack includes all the sports channels too, TS will cost you more than 400 when you add that up)!!

Since you mentioned local content, I would strongly recommend you to go through the list of regional channels on each of these. Tata Sky sucks when it comes to regional content. They are very elitist, and so might not have all the channels you need.

Dish TV scores high on the channel variety in general, and is fabulously priced too.

Finally my two cents on Customer Care - it doesn't matter. I am a Tata Sky customer, and it made ZERO difference to me, since they were never able to resolve any of my queries. Yes they do speak good English.

Go for tata sky-
Good service,
Lesser compression,
Multiple room plan is vfm
New channels get added v fast
You hav to recharge for anythin that you need, say you want to shift, it costs 500, you hav to recharge, on cash payment to person..this is a big plus..
Lastly, abt 3yrs of usage 3 diff connections, zero problems..that says it all..
