Hi there!
It's time to get a new DVD ReWriter for myself. I'm not going to wait for the
52x models to become available any longer. :bleh:

BenQ 1640 seems to be the most recommended here, and on many other
forums as well. But, I would like to consider and compare a few other decent
drives too. Here's what I think are currently the most recommended DVD
writers in the World today:

#1: BenQ 1640 and clones (SONY, HP, Plextor etc)
#2: Pioneer and clones (ASUS, others?)
#3: LG 4163B and newer models

Which models of the above mentioned vendors are available in India? Should
one get a LightScribe drive (HP 640, a rebadged BenQ 1625)? How much do
the popular DVD rewriters cost? And which of them perform really good and
justify their price? Is BenQ the only brand to offer an exclusive 2 years warranty?

I'm particularly interested in Pioneer and LG. I'll go for BenQ 1640 once I am
confirmed that no other drive even comes closer to its name, fame and hype.

Suggestions, price and availability info are invited.
Thanks in advance!

Benq 1640 or Sony DRU-810A which is a clone of the benq. Nothing else other than that drive is worth buying right now.

52x models will never become available. Infact DVD Writers will stay at 16x only ;)

As for the drives, the BenQ DW 1640 blindly. Just close this thread :P

Hmm... 1640 seems to have infected and infested every single mind here. :ohyeah:
Frankly speaking, I don't really like the BenQ 1640's front panel. :(
SONY 810 looks cooler and sexier. What about Pioneer, guys? It's not even
worth a discussion here? IMHO, the newer XL models are good enough. And,
they have DVD-RAM support. Though, I've noticed a few bad reviews of the
110D.

How much for the 1640 is available in your cities? And, SONY 810?

Your choice man ! The drives are all good but don't come close to the 1640 in terms of performance and pricing.

It isn't that they wont work or something, if you prefer one of those, go buy it, without hesitation :)

Anish was the one who loooong back wanted to wait and buy a 52x DVD Writer. It was Eddy if I remember right who corrected him.

And the Sony DRU-810A is the 1640 itself but rebadged a Sony.

Yes, I'm well aware of the fact that SONY DRU-810A is a rebadged BenQ 1640.
It also lacks a few advanced features found in 1640. Still, in the looks department,
it scores much higher than 1640.

^^Why the hell do you care how the drive looks :S. You can buy a sony faceplate and change the faceplate of the benq to whatever you want.

You could just flash to 1640 firmware and get all the advanced features of the Benq as well (Qsuite, Solidburn, etc) right ?

The latest craze seems to be to cross flash the BENQ 1640 with an external model EW164B firmware the reason for this is that the external drive is DMA4 and it therefore has more bandwidth which translates to slightly less chance of dips at high speeds. It'll also probably help if you try to burn to more than 1 1640 at the same time. I am thinking about getting a second 1640.

Cons: Doesn't work with the Qscan part of Qsuite.

Here is a link to the EW164B firmware in case anyone wants to try out this cross flash ...... at your own risk....

Not such a big risk. Dead drives due to bad flashes can easily be recovered.
BTW, nice Slackware sig Sunny!

I can? Well, get me a SONY black bezel and I'm all done.
BTW, forgot to mention this - the black bezel is very very plain looking, nothing at all like the default silver/white bezel that comes with the Sony.
