I have my samsung dvd writer which does not seem to write cds anymore. Writes dvd flawlessly though. Had another sony dvd writer pata lying around but that one cannot write dvds but can write CDs. I had connected my hdd (pata) to my pc so cannot connect both drives to my pc. So another option is to buy a sata dvd writer. I have observed that there are phases in which certain brands have good life span. (Longetivity). So am asking this question.
Waiting for your suggestions.

I would suggest try flashing the firmware of your existing writer and see if does any good. If nothing works then you can go for something like LiteOn or Sony writer.

Ya did that.but everytime i write a cd especially moser baer cd rw (have 3 of them) i get a message of power callibration error.
I get the same message on my sony writer when i write dvds.

^^ I think that is not problem of drive but your cable that goes to the drive. Try changing the cable and see if the problem persists.

The cable is brand new.besides the same problem was appearing on my older pc where i had these drives. The thing is both write but not on all formats.

Update the drive seems to have a problem with erasing rewritables.
And btw any samsung 24x writers out in mumbai and what is their price. Found out sony oem 24x at techtree priced at 1500.is it worth the premium?
They are supposed to be liteon oem sold as sony oem some confusion.

Sony oem drive you talk about is actually a nec-optiarc 7240s. awesome drive but it has a doubtful eject mechanism. It finishes a 4.3gb dvd in 9min at 8x. It's a china made and rashi peripherals imprt it here in india. The actual cost of it is 1250 in lamington road depending upon stock.

I had some weird experience with sony.reads selective dvd.some time of non usage and it refuses to read dvd. And constant firmware upgrades to work.does this happen with newer sony optiarc?

Update: i ve changed the ide cable and the problem still persisted. So changed the mode of the drive to pio mode erased the cd rw and again changed to dma.now the drive work as good as new. So am postponing my purchase.
Thanks for your suggestions
