Just wondering aloud, why are PiBlacks so famous and wanted by everyone?

You can get
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

which is rated 1x Winner of Customer Choice Award - Desktop Memory for just a bit more but is at 1066mhz.

Why choose Newegg.com - G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory or Newegg.com - G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 900(PC2 7200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory when you can get the g.skill 1066mhz one?

IS it the extra metal for heat dissipation? Something about piblacks that I don't know? lower latencies?

Shouldn't lower latencies not mean much since the bus is wider?

the chips on these ram sticks are totally different hence the choice varies.

800/900 are believed to be qimonda chips while 1066 is promos

Pi.black comes with better heatspreaders...low volts and runs cooler

But most importantly its a CL4 kit.

Wow... all of that just went straight above my head.

lolz....the memory IC used on the Rams are different
Qimonda is different co. and ProMos is different.

CAS latency - the lesser the better 800/900 pi.black are CAS 4 while the 1066 variant u posted is CAS 5.

I am a noob. But....

Just to add to the above points, i don't understand why people are after the 'Pi-Black' series when they offer a very less headroom? I have only seen a few people here go above 1000MHz. Rest all are stuck at 800-900 MHz. Its a CL4 though.

But, I am also tracking reviews of Crucial Ballistix 2 x 2GB (800MHz, CL4) for more than a month now. Its getting awesome reviews after the early lull, on Newegg. While Newegg Reviews are said to a noobers' den, a few reviews clearly mention them going beyond 1066MHz. Thats a very high headroom.

Also, though these Ballistix sticks are specified to be 2.0V CL4, many have reported its actually 1.8V. Any many are reporting their sticks to be stable at 15-5-5-15 2T 1000MHz (1.8V) and 1066MHz (2.0V)

Customer Reviews Of Crucial Ballistix 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

Champs! Please clear our doubts.

The Pi-Black sticks offer some real VFM at 3.2k odd. The chips are unknown as of now and G.Skill themselves havn't revealed it.

And if u've not noticed, peeps who've invested in the Pi-Blacks would not crave for much headroom (as u've rightly said!) and yet it does what its supposed to. CL4 @ 400MHz at 1.8v. The max. I've taken mine're till 475 MHz CL5 @ 1.95v. Didn't bother testing any further. :P

For the price I've paid for these, I'm more than happy.

And comparing the Pi-Blacks with the Ballistix's blasphemy lol. Those're some insane sticks which OCs right up there at his master's wish.

the BallisitX dont have them micron d9's anymore.

they've started using single sided chips , which are of another make. ( dont remember ) .

that's one reason why the Pi Black are in demand.

i have a pair of 2 gb ballistix and wanna upgrade to 4gb but cant , simply because the chips are different.
