You can use the XBOX HD-DVD drive on your PC.

Do i need the x box 360 console with it or it will simply plug in to the usb port of my laptop...bcoz i read somewhere that it can only be used with the x box 360 console..

No u can plug it into the usb port, no need of the X360 console. If ur using vista it works straight out of the box, in xp u will need to download the UDF 2.5 driver for it

Edit: heres the driver link Xbox-Scene News: XBOX360 HD-DVDRom UDF Reader v2.5 Windows XP BluePrint

Ok i get it..but wht about HDCP..i am gonna buy a laptop..with either 8600M GT o an ATI mobility HD 2400.. with windows vista. Will i be able to play them at 1080i or they will play as 480i..

^^Depends if the cards are HDCP enabled. If im not mistaken all HD 2000 series cards are but im not sure abt the 8600M. But if they are HDCP enabled then u can play them at 1080P

8600GT supports NVIDIA's Pure Video HD.. actually all GeForce 8M series cards do.. Comparison of NVIDIA Graphics Processing Units

Purevideo and HDCP are two completely different things... some 8 series cards are not HDCP enabled even if they have Purevideo.

@Broar, power consumption, and price. High end laptop CPU's are pricey and will consume a lot of power. now arguably 1080P video wont be watched on the move but still GPU decode will give u more battery life

ok..guys here is what i have ordered from dell...
inspiron 1520 with T7100 proccy,8600M GT,vista premium,2gigs of ram,n dvd writer, will buy the xbox HD DVD rom from newegg..Its there for 180$ n they r giving 6HD DVD titles for free :)..anything else i should know of....

I meant Pure Video HD and Pure Video 2.. not the older Pure Video 1/Pure Video..

The Purevideo-HD moniker encompasses both older Purevideo-based hardware (GeForce 7900/8800) and newer Purevideo2 hardware (Geforce 8400/8500/8600). All PurevideoHD products are certified for Bluray/HD-DVD playback, but Purevideo2 offers markedly superior acceleration for HD-DVD/Bluray movies encoded with H.264/AVC.

PureVideo HD (not PureVideo) implies HDCP capability as far as i can make out from that wiki.. Correct me if i'm wrong though...

All that is useless if your card is not HDCP.

Nvidia does not make it a requirement to have hdcp chip on its partner boards. Most lappies are not HDCP. But those who come with HDMI out will mostly be HDCP ready.

ashish, the config you are choosing will easily play HD DVDs without any hitch. Its a good config.

And that current offer from M$ is one cracking deal.

Close your eyes and buy it. Its the cheapest HD DVD solution in the market.

i have already ordered that laptop from dell..they were offering a BD drive for 510$ more which i didnt take but they recomended 8600M GT 256mb from the 3 options i had for gfx cards..thatis intel x3100,8400GS and 8600M GT.So while configuiring my laptop 8600 was a must for BD drive.Cant use 8400 or intel x3100 if i had to choose BD Drive..So i think 8600 must be HDCP compliant....
