hey guys
need your suggestions for somethin.

im thinkin of getting a raid 0 setup but i cant weight the pros n cons properly.
my options are

1. velociraptor 150gb x2 (16k, 300gb, 340 mBps)
2. seagate 7200.12 500gb x2 (6k, 1tb, 210 mBps)
3. wd black 1tb x2 (12k, 2tb, no idea)

so wht do you think???

I'd say 7200.12 x2, the performance is so close to the raptors that you won't miss it.
Also, it won't hurt you as much when SSD's become more cost effective and you think of swapping one with your mechanical OS/games drive...

you could do well with the seagate or wd drives. but why raid 0? do you mean raid 1? raid 1 is better imho for slight perf gain, but more for data safety. in raid 0 if u lose 1 drive, you lose it all, no way to reconstruct. go raid 5 if your mobo supports it, or buy a card and go raid 6 all the way :P go crazy even managing raid arrays.

Cheers!

In general almost any drive can be used to create a RAID array.

^ depends, sometimes application gains more from faster random access, sometimes average read/write. .12 have poor random access, dunno it hurts or not.

No way, much better. But yeah, certain aspects favour certain stuff, as mentioned above ^

@axeman
Raid 1 has no performance gain with 2 drives AFAIK.

Lol velociraptors hands down! So long as SSDs get cheaper and mainstream, splurge on a couple of velociraptors.

But had I been you, I'd have been a bit stingy and would've opted for a couple of WD FALS drives. Heh just the stingy part of myself. :D

If I had the money to spend, I'd go for the velociraptors. If I didn't, I wouldn't do RAID 0 at all. 1TB of data lost with a failure of a .12!! Rather, I'd get a single drive for backing up the RAID0 files.

Btw, RAID 1 does give better read rates over a single drive. But the writes are the worst ever, so it evens out to no gain at all :P!

Quit Happy with the Below

Asus P5W DH Deluxe, 2 x 160gb Hitichi hdd in RAID 0 (Quit Cool & stable) , Trancend Casing with esata support fitted with WD 500GB for Backup and emergency boot.

@gcbeldar, y not get rid of the 2 160s and get the .12 or any other high perf disk? More space and better perf/ stability for the money?
