One of my friends will be going to US on June 30th. He wants to get a good laptop for Usual work (LAMP, Database work etc.) and gaming too.

Now any lappy would work fine for Office work but he wants a good gaming laptop too. He is confused between the DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 based laptops.

DX10 laptops are yet to be released and he is not sure of the performance of these lappys in gaming.

He is skeptical about DX9 based lappy as DX9 will be phased out soon.

So, should he get a DX9 or DX10 based laptop? Any news about the good DX10 models to be released would also be helpful :)

Thanks for the links dude. I think my friend would prefer DX10 laptops from HP and Dell though.

What about some DX9 gaming laptops? and which is the best DX9 laptop graphics chipset?

First, How does he plan to buy it ? Because Dell does not accept International credit cards and they do not have retailers, only option is to order it online using a US issued CC. HP also does not accept international CC online, though you can purcahse HP lappies from circuitcity, bestbuy, compusa, etc....

Amazon accepts international credit cards, is your friend planning to order the laptop from amazon ?

The HP Pavilion dv6500t Special Edition series looks good.

Thanks dude! The HP 6500t lappy looks cool. I have recommended 6500t and 9500t to my friend.

9500t has Nvidia 8600GS chipset so it seems better and my friend can also afford it but the screen size might be too big (17 inches).

hey m8.......i dont see a budget mentioned here so i assume its around 1200-1300$ ........so please check out the configs i made for Funky in his previous thread.......it is from costco....those guys have the cheapest laptops and the HP ones are customizable.........if you want just mention ur budget here and ill giv u a nice config

The budget should be around $1100. He is a bit skeptical about DX10 laptops so he'll go for a DX9 based one.

He wants a good graphics chipset in his laptop so that he can play most current games as well future DX9 based games (he's skipping DX10 as DX9 games should continue to release for 1-2 more years).

So, please suggest some good DX9 based gaming laptops near $1100

@Ankit that link confused me a bit.

Please suggest some good DX9 models. Which DX9 mobile GPU should be the best and within his budget: Nvidia 7600GS, 7800GS or 7900GS

I think 7800GS should be good for my friend even if it exceeds his budget a little.

Please give some Laptop models with these chipsets.

Afaik, the laptop series is not the same as desktop (they'r not 7800gs,7900gs etc) more like 7400go, 7700go ..lemme look around and get back to u

Thanks for the links dude!

Both Asus laptops are based on ATI chipsets so that worries me a bit. My friend would like to install Linux on his Laptop too and i have heard that ATI's Linux support is bad. Also both chipsets are middle-end.

I found one Acer Lappy with Nvidia 7900GS. This is the link:

http://global.acer.com/products/notebook/as9510.htm

They give the option of installing Nvidia 7600 and 7900GS.

Dell launched some new laptops today. The one that interests me the most is "Dell Inspiron 1520":

Actually, my friend is highly confused between a DX9 and a DX10 based laptop. He wants his lappy to be somewhat future proof, so i have suggested him the "Dell Inspiron 1520" with Nvidia 8600M GT. It has the following features:

1) 15.4 inch screen

2) Intel's new Santa Rosa platform

3) 8 colors available for the laptop! It means u can choose from 8 brilliant colors.

4) Option to purchase Nvidia 8600M GT or Nvidia 8400M GS

5) In-built webcam + free Creative e630 earphones (these are one of the best earphones!)

So, lets see how things shape up.

BTW, is there a big difference b/w Nvidia go 7600 & 7900GS?

That Inspiron 1520 is a brilliant one! But im pretty sure it'l be priced upwards of $1700 as thats the current market rate for a lappy with that config..

How much u gettin that Acer for? Looks good..

See theres nothing called "future proof" these days. Its all a matter of how "new" a tech you can afford. Is it possible to get it from dubai? Cuz one of my friend got this laptop for 58k!! :

Tech Digest: Acer 5920 notebooks - inspired by nature

Yes thats right 58k!

Im not sure about the performance difference but im guessing there should be a good amount of difference as the desktop models sure did have a lot of difference.

Hey, you may wanna check out the Asus F3JP or Asus F3SV models too..

Come equipped with the 8600M GS but are pretty good models. The Dell Inspiron 1520 is a good choice but steeply priced at the moment, imo.

Thanks for the links @Alias. I think DX10 laptops have started to come up and we'll see many more DX10 based laptops being released.

@Ank1t, that Acer model also looks good.
