* Based on Ubuntu / Deb -- Great amount of software and support available.
* More user friendly for beginners : Come on. You've installed an operating system which boasts of all softwares integrated and it cant play an mp3 or an avi file ..? Install restricted drivers et al (and not many ppl have an unlimited broadband plan). Mint will have most codecs and so called restricted drivers installed by default.
* Great interface : You have to use it feel this.
