I am currently a windows user. I've been attracted to linux lately.
I've read a couple of articles and each one says that it entirely depends upon the task that you want to perform on computer.

So a list of my tasks:
1. Developing apps/web-apps most of the time.
2. Surf internet (thats obvious :P)
3. Music and Movies (xvid/divx) sometimes.
4. Some heavy downloading.
5. Reading Ebooks.
6. Some hacking stuff (wireless, web, reverse-engineering etc.)
7. Instant Messaging.

The OS must have a large repository and a good community in case of problems.

My Hardware (Its a laptop):
Processor - Intel Core2Duo T5750 2.0 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 664MHz FSB
RAM - 2x1GB Hyundai, PC2-5300U DDR2-333
Motherboard - LG Electronics Inc. LHOTSE-II
Graphics Card - Onboard ATI x1200 series, 256MB memory
HDD - Hitachi 160GB, 5400RPM
Optical Drive - LG superdrive
WLAN - Atheros AR5007EG

Monitor - 14.1' LG LCD glossy finish.
Speakers - No speakers
Keyboard/Mouse - Frontech mouse, no separate keyboard.
That pretty sums up what I do on computer. I don't want to go over the hassle to test OSes and stick to one when I find it good. I just can't waste time discovering what an OS has to offer and move to next if it doesn't satisfies me.
I am pretty much sure someone on here might have same needs as me and maybe able to help me.
Please suggest some linux distributions.

get any popular distro...they all have enough documentation online which is one google away

fedora/debian/ubuntu

Your requirements are pretty basic and common. I can't think of any distribution that will not support these features. So it comes back to the "personal choice" option. However, I believe Ubuntu has a wide user base and a large online community that can provide support. I have also personally found openSUSE to be very good. There are quite a few members in this forum who believe Mandriva to be a good option. SO you could settle for one among these three.

Thanks.
I've tried Ubuntu and its good.
I am currently download openSuse. Its 90% complete. I hope it would keep upto my expectations.

Thanks for the advice, though.

I must tell you, since I didn't explain elaborately, that I need security tools like Metasploit, ettercap, wireshark, Aircrack, Hydra etc. to run on it.

^^Hehe ;P Fedora for newbie is way to much , and openSUSE configuration system is quite complex. Not to mention the current software stack is outdated :P

Everyone, thanks for suggestions

So which one do you suggest?

Edit: Sorry missed your previous post.

^^Its way faster than One [Live cd] ..

There is a strong reason I am suggesting mandirva .. You won't have ATI driver support now, they have discontinued your card support and top of that Ubuntu comes only with Xorg ATI stack not with radeonhd.. Try mandriva it should work flawlessly :)

Who they?

My advice is to go for Ubuntu :)
one of the best distro's you can have and i would advice you to stick with one for all your tasks since if you start to try out there are lots in the kitty for you ;)

No graphics support for your card as it is not listed in ATI Mobility section nor in Integrated section.

Graphics Drivers & Software

Edit : Thats catalyst 9.3, which doesn't have support for Xorg 7.4 and onwards. You have to resort to radeonhd.

All new distro comes with Xserver/Xorg 7.4 and above

My product has been listed under Legacy. S**t!

So, that means no Proprietary drivers for me.

You can always degrade your Xorg server to a lower version and install older proprietary drivers.

My choice Ubuntu.

Good luck.

PS:- Search other online forums too apart from TE, especially in Europe or North America. You might find a great solution to your problem.
