Which microphone?

Sorry forgot to mention. Its for general PA use - vocals/singing, but looking for something with decent fidelity :)

For general PA use you can't go wrong with the SM58 or the cheaper PG58. Both are extremely rugged and are pretty much the standard for live vocals, and with a tight enough cardoid pattern to help eliminate feedback in small venues. Once you get into large spaces there are better choices, but I would look at that venerable mic very seriously.

Plus, they're cheap to get - not $40, but about $60 in India.

^ Thanks :)

Would any of the above options be better/compare well to the SM58? A lot of the customer reviews point to the first two options reaching into the Beta58 territory (although customer reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt).

Another thing, quite a few reviews of the PG58 mention that its not really the bargain version of the SM58 we expect, but instead is quite far off ?

Well, it is, but it's a beer budget mic like the ones linked. You have to note that people buying mics worth 30 dollars haven't heard great stuff, normally.

The good thing about the Shures (at least the SM) is consistency. Cheap mics usually have that as their biggest issue, so their may be sensitivity differences of up to 3dB between mics from the same batch. That's twice as loud/soft. Their polar patterns are sometimes off as well, so a given mic may pick up stray feedback at a very low level.

OTOH, for casual use specs don't matter that much anyway. However, I don't think any of those mics would go up well against the Shure, with the possible exception of the EV.

But then again, naaah. Just get the Shure. If you're buying from US, it's as cheap as any of those.
