Just read the following about WinZip : "with over 150 million downloads to date and an average of over 600,000 downloads per week in 2005" .

Can someone tell me which program has been downloaded the most ?

Thanks.

Winamp and display drivers :P

OK. I was hoping it wasn't Kaaza Media Desktop or some other yucky malware-infested program.

I was thinking of starting another thread "Which is the most pirated program ?" but decided against it. That would certainly open a can of worms.

A free computer program used for file-sharing has become the most downloaded piece of software ever, its parent company announced on Thursday.

The program, Kazaa, lets users locate and download music and video files from each other over the internet. This and similar programs have attracted the wrath of the entertainment industry for making it very simple to share copyrighted works.

Sharman Networks says its program has now been downloaded more than 230 million times, placing it ahead of instant messaging program ICQ in the list of all time downloads.

On Friday, a leading software download site showed Kazaa slightly behind ICQ with 227 and 229 million downloads respectively. But according to Download.com, Kazaa is sure to overtake. It was downloaded more than 2.5 million times in the last week, while ICQ was downloaded just 330,000 times.

Download figures may not precisely reflect the number of times a program has actually been installed and used, but nonetheless analysts say the figures highlight the popularity of music file sharing.

Of course this is very old news..... 2003.

But according to this http://www.cnet.com/4520-11136_1-6257577-1.html

Today instant messengers are ubiquitous, but when ICQ ("I Seek You") was first released in 1997, it was truly the first of its kind. Though competitors such as Yahoo Instant Messenger and AIM have since encroached on ICQ's territory, this chat client remains enormously popular with international users, and it has remained one of Download.com's most popular applications since its launch.

Winamp is next on the list followed by napster and Firefox...

Lol ... i doubt we have even a competitor when it comes to "Windows Hotfixes" :P ..

I bet there arent any other s/w downloads surpassing "Window patches, service packs, tweaks" and what not!!

I update quickplayer, a small less than 1 mb music player for which I did some testing sometime back, 7-Zip, most FF nightlies & updates to the extensions. :)

Guys, when I started this thread I was referring to apps only. Not updates, patches, fixes, drivers, plugins, oss, etc.

I would be surprised if it is ICQ.ICQ is not at all popular here in India and in many parts of the world.
On the other hand almost every pc user has come across winamp at some point or the other.
