All OS Which team are you on - iOS or Android? And, why?

Android, because of,
  • Revanced
  • TC
  • Customizations etc. things that you only have for Android.
After wasting a decade tinkering with custom ROMs on budget phones, I was ready to give up on Android and switch to the dark side. At the last minute, I figured I’d give a flagship Samsung a shot before making that leap. And guess what? I’m really enjoying this dependable Android experience. That urge to switch to the dark side has vanished!
I hope that iOS opens up like it has in the EU, but I have a lifetime shared developer certificate for my iPhone and use it to for the sideloaded "Plus" apps that are in a way better than Revanced as they have everything integrated within the official app.

Truecaller also works natively on iOS now.

Also, as I mentioned previously Files acts like a unifying file manager across iOS with third-party cloud providers as well, so it is easy to share files across all apps while maintaining the sandbox and not allowing one app to detect or access files from another app. Don't miss much compared to using Solid Explorer on Android.

It was ages ago where I posted custom ROMs on XDA, even modded the dumb Samsung phones in the noughties but it becomes less of a thing for a daily driver as time passes by and comes at a premium.

if LG is an indicator then I would say no, iOS won't open up in other regions as there is no reason.

Erstwhile LG typically locks it's bootloader except in the EU. Never unlocked it anywhere else.

I was curious that there wasn't any revanced equivalent apps for iOS.

Thing is there are but only if you live in the EU is what I gathered from you.

so there is a hierarchical way to view the file system on iOS without too many limitations?

You do have multiple modded apps on iOS, but you have to either use a personal certificate that limits you to 3 active apps at a time and has to be renewed every week, or you can purchase a shared developer certificate that lasts a year and allows you to sideload any app (at extra cost of course).

Apps that have share sheet enabled allow you to export files to specific folders on the Files app, either locally or to cloud and then access the same from other apps. I prefer simply using OneDrive most of the time.

I am sure that if somehow iOS opens up even 50% to the level of Android, 95% of people above my post who mentioned they like android will move to iOS in a blink. I totally get the allure of cracked APKs and customization and all that. I have done this when I was younger.
I use android tablet for such things as I anyways consume those things at my home only. So, I don't need those things on my daily driver phone.

But if sideloading is important, please do look into "LIVE CONTAINER" as that can give you ability to "sideload" numerous apps on your iPhone and you can escape the 3 app limit. I am using combination of "Live Container + Side Store" to have on device refresh ability. I have like 10 apps sideloaded within "Live Container". The ++ apps (basically modded) are for Twitter (X), Spotify, Youtube Music, Youtube, Facebook and couple more.
Yes there is no revanced in iOS but there are youtube apps that give you ability to watch videos without ads, background playback, download videos etc.

What?!?

..is this personal cert business that has to be renewed every week, he said :dead:

If that wasn't bad enough you have to pay to install apps?

I've never heard of paying to install apps on an OS before. But hey its apple so there's always a way.

Ah, I was expecting similar functionality to any hierarchical file browser.

That's not the case.

All you have is the ability to save files in custom locations or to the cloud which is creating your own remote file hierarchy.

American companies have been pushing cloud storage since day 1 so that's the deal with them

But there remains no way to categorise files on iOS. Not hierarchical anyway. They are dumped in a general area or where the os thinks is best and you get to see them in a flat manner. Like in media file manager programs.

Kids today understand apple's system. They have no clue with hierarchical file managers are or even why they are needed

I am using personal certificate and *do not* deliberately go and renew every week. I have live container installed which has like 10+ apps installed within it. My weekly refresh happens automatically on device itself (automatically), no need to connect to laptop. I am not paying anyone anything.

Still way too much work but you do you, personally I cant imagine using an OS like that, I have like 50+ gigs of music, 20-30gigs of comics, 10-15gigs of books on my phone at all times, and not having the ability to access those like you would on a pc and or not having the ability to sideload open sourced apps without workarounds is a deal breaker to me.

Personally, I would consider a switch if Apple ever decides to open their OS, just for the Apple watch, but let's see

Peripheral to the discussion but I'm amazed to discover that Apple now makes it's entire iPhone range including Titanium Pro in India.

They are ramping up production steadily to service Europe & eventually the US

There won't be the 10% import duty but importing parts will still make iPhones more expensive than say the gulf

So you saying that "Made in India" iPhones aren't shipped to US yet?

Great but this 'weekly refresh' business sounds scary

Can't do anything about it. For personal (non developer) certificates, it is apple imposed restriction. The only good part is that earlier, I would have to connect to laptop/macbook to refresh apps on iPhone or at least have macbook on same network as iPhone and refresh the app.
But now, I do neither and everything happens on device. The sidestore app even alerts me when 1 day is remaining *IF* for some odd reason, the automatic update didn't happen. This happens very rarely though. Basically, I am not doing anything special (like I used to) to maintain access to the modded apps on my iPhone.

Can it happen in the future?

You don't know. That's what I meant by scary

No, I don't think it will happen. This "7 day refresh" is happening since years. I used to do on my iPhone 6S too. What is paid today is some people buying certificates online which allow them to load more than 3 apps. That costs money but those certificates can get revoked and what not and the "supplier" usually provides a new certificate if that happens.
The reason people "buy" certificates is so they can sideload numerous apps and are not restricted by 3 apps.

But with live container, one can have more than 3 apps even on personal certificate.

There seem to be a few downsides to LiveContainer though. A single container can have one guest app active at a time since it injects all apps in the container to the same app ID. There is no sandbox between apps running on the same container. Remote notifications, sharing between apps as well as every app might not work.

A paid certificate at least runs everything natively. I had paid $25 in bitcoin for mine and it is in its second year. The first one lasted the whole year without a revoke.
