Which Unlocked phone from US ?

Ok so i had opened previously a thread about buying the iPhone but calculating the economics, cost of buying an unlocked iPhone 4S, it is simply coming out to be very expensive. Also i have a camera too on my list before the phone so really cannot spend so much.
So what other options are available for me to buy an unlocked phone here in US ?
What options do i have ?

Has anyone here ever bought the locked AT&T Captivate on ebay.com and then bought an unlock code from ebay.com ?

Because i see that on ebay.com, locked AT&T is costing less than 180$ while the unlocked ones are upwards of 200$

So i was thinking that if i get a captivate locked and get it unlocked through someone from ebay

Why do you want to buy an unlock code from Captivate? Its very easy to get it unlocked. Check on xda. Also, check out Samsung Infuse. Good phone.
