I need a USB sound card and am pretty much a n00b when it comes to PC Audio :ashamed:

the EMU 0404 and Audigy 2ZX are some cards that come to mind if I were buying PCI, but regarding USB cards, I have no clue...

Help me out guys!

noob... yea right :bleh:...

Those speakers tell a different story...

Planning to put it up with that apple of yours are you :P... Get what Chaos suggested... Messa a noob too on sound... Maybe Sound God Eazy or Lord Zhop will be able to help you over this...

P.S. Is that your dog in the avtar...

i think chaos used an optoplay last time and said it was pretty good. think m audio has some solutions as well that you can look at

yepper, unlike my desktop mini- monster (mini compared to the rest of the full fledged ogres peeps here have n a leash) with the whirring fans and what not, the Mac runs whisper quiet :)

Any specific models in mind?

And nopes, that ain't my dog in the avatar.....though i am sure he can beat the pulp out of your smelly cat :devil2:

think m audios usb player is called transit .. not sure how they all fare since i hardly pay attention to usb cards.. i remember seeing some reviews of the optoplay last time and it looked positive . wait for chaos take on this though

Optoplay is out of production now. Sweet little card :D.

Edit: Don't even think of Audigy* for that system of yours :P.

wow....neat..the EMU USB is out already ! A tad pricey, but worth the money I guess. Else go the optoplay way.

my finances are already screwed :(

$200 is out...Maybe I'll wait for the July salary :(

unless EMU 202 is pretty much at par with the 404

Since I can't pick the EMU 0404 PCI

SO have to decide between the following:

M-AUDIO - Transit - Hi-Resolution Mobile Audio Upgrade

mobile 24-bit/96kHz USB audio upgrade

stereo analog/optical digital input (1/8")

stereo line/headphone output (1/8")

TOSlink optical digital output allows AC-3 and DTS pass-through

accommodates self-powered stereo microphones

includes 3.5mm (male) to TOSlink (female) adapter

includes Maximum Audio Tools software bundle

line/mic in

dynamic range: 100dB (typical, -60dB input, A-weighted)

signal-to-noise ratio: 100dB (typical, A-weighted)

THD+n: 0.00316% (typical)

maximum input voltage: +6dBV

line out

dynamic range: 104dB (typical, -60dB input, A-weighted)

signal-to-noise ratio: 104dB (typical, A-weighted)

thd+n: 0.00316% (typical)

maximum output voltage: 0dBV

size/weight: 2-1/4” X 3-5/8” X 1”; 0.1 lbs.

ASIO 2

MME

Sound Manager

DirectX

Mac OS X Core Audio

OR

the EMU 0202

EMU 0202 USB 2.0 Audio Interface Sound Card

EMU 0202 USB - The Features:

* Pristine 24-bit/192kHz A/D and D/A converters (A/D and D/A: 112dB measured SNR performance)

* E-MU Class-A ultra-low noise mic/line/hi-Z preamp (-127dB EIN) with 60dB of gain

* E-MU Class-A ultra-low noise line/hi-Z preamp (-127dB EIN) with 60dB of gain

* Independent ground lift switches for optimal audio fidelity/flexibility

* Hardware zero-latency direct monitoring (mono or stereo)

* Plug-and-play operation with hands-on control of all major functions

* USB bus powered

* Cross-platform support (Mac OS X and Windows XP/x64) and compatibility with most popular audio/sequencer applications (ASIO2, WDM, MME, Apple Core Audio and Core MIDI, AC3 and DTS Passthru protocols supported)

Both are A/D - D/A converters....

The first supports 24 bit/96khz Claimed THD 0.03% and is coming for ~$80

The second supports 24 bit/192khz claimed THD 0.02% and is coming for ~$140

The M-AUDIO Transit... no contest on the price-to-features front. If you can wait a while to get a better USB interface for $200-250, it'll be worth it.

The optoplay is a cheaper and better alternative to Transit, IMO the transit's price isnt worth it. Either get the EMU 0202 or the optoplay. Well you can keep the optoplay as a spare card, since its really cheap, and if when you get enough finance, you can go for the EMU.
