Hi.

Can anyone explain why this VPN business?

I understand the context of that in a office. We use VPN to access office items. But why someone uses for personal usage? For what?

And what are these provider selling?

Thanks

Many reasons.

1) ISPs can't shape/throttle your data. They just see a connection to your VPN.

2) Some measure of protection if you use BitTorrent and other such services. The VPN creates a level of abstraction.

3) Access data that is behind region boundaries. e.g., get a US VPN for Netflix or Hulu.

^yes. but not all VPNs supports Hulu. They are pretty good at detecting them. So make sure the IP/VPS/whatever lets you watch Hulu.

Services like Skype, Apple FaceTime, and lot of news is filtered by my ISP that I used to use! so to turn around , I had to the VPN route!

I'm using earthvpn for the past 1 month experienced smoother browsing even for Indian websites. Ping to singapore from my location has dropped from 320 to 170. US ping also reduced by approx 120. I'm just using it for online gaming and browsing. Its $4 at the moment with most basic feature. Servers are located at Chennai and Pune.

Even techenclave website is smoother and loads very quickly using earthVPN even though underlying network BSNL is the bottleneck.

im using unotelly to access netflix.. really good service just registered for the yearly package.. ive been lazy - haveto setup vpn to my router now hahaha

So just as a usecase, is there anyone who doesn't have cable but has instead opted for an annual VPN+Hulu+ package?

Which VPN service do you guys use and how do you use it please?
Everyone use VPN for secure data encryption, online anonymity and access blocked website .. There are free and paid VPNs so most of the people prefer to use free VPN for accessing websites even its not secure but they don't want to pay for this service ..
Most of the guys use Hotspot Shield, CyberGhost, Tunnelbear and some others.. Zenmate extension also on top now in free list..

Did you try watching videos? How's the performance?

Also I'd like to know, that if whether the speed provided by my ISP matters in case of VPN? Because if VPN is slow, then my net will be slow doesn't matter whatever speed is provided by my ISP right?

I'm using the minimum lvl of encryption on the connection that is pptp. Encryption adds overhead and requires more bandwidth. I get better speed on Pune server than Chennai server. So even server connection matters. yes if vpn server backend routing is poor then isp speed does not matter. With my 8mpbs connection I'm able to watch HD videos with occasional buffering but Hulu is blocking access to some US vpn servers on tv.com Sometimes I get a message
