I wanted to buy a new 8Gb drive (I do that all the time
<
). Wanted it to be small, good looking and have good speeds.

After looking at quiet a few models, I narrowed down on the HP v220W 8GB drive as I have personally used a friends v220W and liked the form factor.

It was tiny, made of metal and had write speeds of 4MB/s (fairly decent). Came with a 2 year Warranty and it was available on Flipkart for 394/- Shipped.

Then I came across the PNY M1 Attache 8GB. It had the exact same design as the v220W, metal casing and write speed of 8MB/s.

Plus, it was available on Flipkart for 330/- Shipped. Only thing was that it came with a 1 year warranty (according to flipkart).

As PNY is not a very well known brand in India for Pendrives, I decided to do some research.

And the results shocked me!
<

1) All the HP drives being sold in India are manufactured by PNY. PNY is the OEM supplier to HP. HP has stated the same on it's website. Hence the similarity in designs.

2) PNY pendrives carry a 5 year Warranty that is handled directly by PNY India. I confirmed this with their Facebook representative. He went so far as to tell me that they would not even need a proof of purchase for RMA!!

3) PNY drives have higher write speeds than their HP counterparts. So, while the HP v220W gives 4MB/s, the PNY M1 Attache offers 8MB/s.

4) Almost all of PNY models are priced cheaper than their HP counterparts despite being technologically superior and having more warranty.

If I were to compare the PNY M1 Attache and the HP v220W against each other, I would say:

1) The HP comes with a glossy metal casing (fingerprint magnet). The PNY had a matte finish (no fingerprints).

2) As previously mentioned, the read speeds of the HP are ~ 4MB/s whereas the PNY gave me 7.93MB/s on CDM3.
<

3) Warranty! HP has 2 years whereas PNY has 5 years.

4) And obviously, the PNY drive is 64/- rupees cheaper than the HP drive!

The reason why I took all the trouble of typing this out is so that TE members may make a better informed choice when deciding to buy HP drives (as I see that the HP drives are gaining popularity these days!). I have seen many TE members recommending HP drives to fellow TEians and while HP is no doubt a good choice, the above facts definitely make PNY a wiser bet!

PNY is a very well known and popular brand in the US. And though it has not really clicked in the Indian market, I am sure that it'll be doing well in the near future.

As for me, I am enjoying the new drive...

Nice write up, I think the trasncend 8gb USB3.0 might be a better buy since its around 900 and has a 10-11mbps write speed even on USB 2.0

#Crazy_Eddy has one, please confirm.

Do post benchmarks in the flash drive benchmark thread please
<

Awesome, I was in the market to get a cheap/fast/tiny pen drive to be used on my HU. Looks like these PNYs are perfect
<

PNY is a good OEM brand and quite reliable too. I guess you did not know previously that they supplied OEM drives to HP, etc.

#bottle Does Nirmal have the JF700 8GB?

^^ Yep... The Transcend is a better choice especially as it is USB 3.0. But as of now, most of us are still stuck with USB 2.0 and as the PNY comes for 1/3rd the cost, it seemed more economical to me. Atleast till I upgrade to a USB 3.0 rig!

I'll post the CDM3 benchmarks in the benchmarks thread...

^^ Though I had noticed the similarity in designs, I was initially of the opinion that HP made the drives and supplied them to PNY!! In reality it is the other way round!

Hmm actually I checked the thread too late, or would have gone for Transcend USB 3.0 pendrives. Corsair Voyager is not bad with 11 mbps write speed on the USB 2.0 device, I had a Kingston 8gb earlier with a write speed of 5 mbps, and it was a pain if you want transfer large files. Cannot think why anyone would buy a drive with slower write speeds.

However Corsair's after sales service is unmatched, as I am pretty sure pen drives usually don't last longer then 2 years.

Not really, using a corsair voyager regularly that I bought in 2007 and one transcend 128mb drive bought in 2004 still works fine too
<

And now Corsair also has the Voyager in USB 3.0 flavor. More speed for the speed hungry!! Though it is a bit on the expensive side...

And I thought that I had a low capacity pendrive that is still working. I too have a transcend model as yours and its working too. Also have a Corsair one which i used for 4 yrs and was replaced 2 years ago still 4 yrs warranty remaining

. Old corsair package had a really big lanyard and also a big metal clip which I am not seeing in newer models. Also nowadays no pendrive manufacturers give the lanyard too. Some need them too else they lose their pendrives.

Yeah but it is still not available everywhere. I checked in Chennai and B'lore, not stocked as yet. Even if it is costly it is USB 3.o and from corsair. That alone turns everything upside down.

Back to topic, thanks for the clarification about warranty and speed. When my cuz wanted to buy pendrive, she ended up buying PNY model as she was crazy about the metal thingy and was worried about its life.

Lanyards are available for as low as 5 rupees across railway stations here in Mumbai.

The USB 3.0 Voyager is widely available on ebay in case you are interested. Apply a flat 150 off on 1000 coupon and you'll get a good price.

Yeah getting nokia or other mobile manufacturer's copy lanyard is working fine with folks in my office, I am trying to say that earlier they gave and now they don't with falling prices.

Also thanks for the ebay ideas, but normally any retailer would stock them and they haven't here.
