Hi everyone,

Someone on this forum raised this question in another thread about how can we play sports game when we can just go out and play. So i have created this thread where we can have discussion over this topic and get a logical answer.:hap2:

According to me, we play sports game due to:

+ Unpredictability everytime we play
+ When we are tired we can't immerse ourselves enough in a RPG or FPS to enjoy them. Hence Sports game are perfect as they are based on instincts.
+ Huge replayiblity
+ Co-op is damn fun and sometime we get more intense matches then the real life.
+ They never get boring unless you are playing fifa on
PC:P
Thats all i can think right now, feel free to share your thoughts:clap::clap:

Seems like sport/simulation games aren't considered as highly as FPS/RPGs..

I really do agree with all your points there.. the last one being the best of the lot... :P

For the poll, I would vote for everything except sports and simulation.

As for your points in favor of sports games.

+ Unpredictability everytime we play

Not really. When it comes to sports games, there is no plot, no twists or surprises, no ace up the sleeve moments, very little choices to be made and may be a wee bit of strategy to the game. There is no unpredictability. If you are skilled in using the requisite controls, you win, otherwise you loose. Even FPS games are more unpredictable due to plot twists.

On the contrary its the prime time to get immersed in RPG or FPS. Sports games on the other hand tend to be boring. The only time I touch a sports game like cricket/tennis/soccer is when I have absolutely nothing else to do. Yeah I made 10000 runs in a test match of Brain Lara Cricket and bowled out the opposite team for 0 runs, big deal !!... I think not.

+ Huge replayiblity

They have as much re-playability as a game of Tic Tac Toe. If you can play a 100 games of tic tac toe without getting bored, you can play the same number of games of Cricket/FIFA or Virtua Tennis. But that definitely depends on the person.

+ Co-op is damn fun and sometime we get more intense matches then the real life.

If you are playing againist another person they may actually be fun.

Most of your points also apply to any FPS played against Bots.

Do you feel the same about Quake or UT against bots?

Yep, you took it right out of my mouth. When I have nothing better to play, I prefer playing a UT or Q3 bot game with a 999 Frag limit. It still manages to be a bit more satisfying than playing a typical sports game. :P

I get the same satisfaction out of PES. Instead of a run and gun like quake, it almost seems like a procedurally generated puzzle game that changes slightly every time you play it. Like a SuDoKu puzzle, where the concepts used to solve each puzzle are the same but each puzzle is different because of the starting grid of numbers. :P

Lord Nemesis, it seems like you have only played sports games based on Cricket which by co-relation are some of the worst games ever made (except maybe BLC).

If you have a passion for PES and know all the special moves inside out as well as when to utilize them, only then will you be having the prime sports experience.

Same thing applies to simracing, fighting games, etc.

Only 1 Sport - Football !

One more reason : Coz we suck at it in real life, and mite be a pro in virtual life :P

I did play play sports games other than cricket like Virtua Tennis and older versions of FIFA and some others and I am not saying that no one finds them to be fun because I do not. But claiming that they have unpredictability and that they are the easiest to play when you are tired compared to other genres is a bit ridiculous don't you think? I did agree that some times there is a wee bit of strategy to these games. I also said replayability is in the same level as Tic Tac Toe. Its not essentailly a bad thing, just that only a few people would find them replayable.

If the Thread Starter just claimed that sports games are fun despite lack of these elements, I would not have had an issue with that. There are many games that manage to be fun without having unpredictictability or replayability. Case in point. Serious Sam. Again not every one finds them fun and it has the same level of replayability as Tic Tac Toe. If you can mangage to play a 100 games of Tic Tac Toe without getting bored, you can easily play a 100 rounds of Serious sam or a Q3 Bot Match or any sports game.

Whatever you said also holds true for mutiplayer FPS like UT,quake,CS etc.

Personally i think sports games are boring.
