CPU/Mobo Wierd problems with Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H

Hey EveryOne,
I am facing some Wierd problems with this Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H board. Plz help me out!!

1. This board has 4 Ram slots My Ram is working on just two slots and after every few days the board starts giving long beeps which means RAM is not seated properly. I take it out and insert again and everything seems to work for another few days.

2. Another big problem is harddisk access speeds. Again after few days my harddisk access speeds become very slow. I get to know this by my windows taking 10 minutes to load. (Is there any softwarer I can use to see exact access speeds)

My config is
Proc Athlon X2 4400 + 2.3 (at stock speeds) I ahve compered Wprime results with online resiluts of the same procy and proc is surely OK

Harddisk Seagate 250 7200.10 (Already RMA'ed once)
RAM Transcend 1GB single stick

I am using latest bios and latest drivers on Gigabyte Site and I have also tried several other combinations of bios and drivers but nothing seems to work. PlZ help me. These problems keep on coming after every 2 - 3 days.
 
did u do memtest86+ ?

google n dload it to test memory.

if u hav vista... u can do it by memory diagnose tool it offers..

check for problems when u pc is running fine.

problem maybe due to slot/memory controller...i has similar prob wid msn-mx se...had to replace the board.
 
Well both ur problems can be RAM related as well as motherboard memory controller related as pointed out by madnav.

The first problem about RAM looks more a problem of the RAM sticks than the RAM slots, else the same slot will not work after reseating either immideately or after a couple of days.

The second problem can also be caused by the RAM, as u know the data is not directly loaded from the hdd, it is the RAM that the data is loaded to from the hdd, so if the RAM is faulty then this problem will occur.

I suggest you get another ram stick and try with that. If problem persists then it is time to change the mobo.

Is there a way to test the harddisk access speed ??

are you sure you've used the "right" bios update , make sure u check which revision your board is! ,their website is really confusing on that part :S (rev 1,2,0....?).

also try gettin another ram stick n check .

Yeah man I am sure I am using the right bios. Rev 1.0

I tried memtest : No errors. Was not able to arrange for another RAM stick.

I know that data first comes to RAM but can slow window start up be becos of RAM. Has anyone faced this issue before??
 
I own a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H version 1.1 motherboard. I completed the building of this computer in late November, but am still having trouble with a monitor lag/hang/delay on cold start-ups. You may wish to review my problems, for comparison with yours, over at

Be careful of advice to replace all sorts of hardware. There may well be some design problem with the mobo, as I have already RMAd one, and my problems are persisting with this one. It might be a great idea that doesn't quite work from Gigabyte. If it DOES work, it is a nice mobo. I am still hoping, but I have spent too much time on it and I am an inch away from going to a different company.

Yes i too had the same problem as mentioned. I have 2 GB transcend ddr2 800 it used to give long beep after a month of installation. Then i used in different banks for few days and reverted back. The problem didnt occur later.
And you are right with the boot up. it really takes 3 mins to boot up the system. It hangs right there while showing windows screen with no hard disk activity.
 
Not sure about ram, but hard disk problem can be easily solved . This board by default emulates SATA drives as IDE for compatibility with windows xp . In bios you can change it to run on AHCI mode ( my friend has same board ) . If bios is set to IDE mode and ur pc crashes once or twice or due to load shedding xp goes in PIO mode. One solution is to install all drivers in XP properly and then set bios to AHCI mode. Second is set to AHCI and reinstall XP and during setup press f6 to load ahci drivers ( available in CD ). Or just install Vista which comes with AHCI generic drivers by default . When hard disk is accessed in AHCI mode then there is no problem of xp going to PIO mode and slowing down system drastically.

I have set up in AHCI mode 250 Gb 7200.10 and i get average 80 MB/sec. But my ram seems to be under clocked. 4200+ when using divider by 6, (2200/6)= 366.67 and for ddr2 its 733.3Mhz. Can i use multiplier 5.5

Do you still have ram issues? you can try ddr single channel by placing 2 rams in different banks. try this for few hours before changing to dual channel mode.
 
I mean the ahci drivers are on CD that came with motherboard which you have to copy on a floppy disk after that boot with windows cd and press f6 . Now you have to insert the floppy with drivers and XP will recognize your hard disks in AHCI mode . If you have installed all drivers that come with mobo cd then you can try setting bios to AHCI and boot, xp might just boot .
