i am staying in hotel right now.. d hotel owner has agreed to set up a wifi router( airtel broadband) so that hotel people can sufr net .. .now my question is ..what is d max area covered by the wifi network.. can i surf the net using wifi from my room( which is ata distance of 30M from the router???
nd can the owner restrict the area covered by wifi... Owner says that i should nt surf from room.. i have to sit near the wifi router and sufr.. reply plz..

Y don't u just try out and see if u can surf from your room?

The owner can't restrict the area of coverage. He can only make the network secure and allow/ block connections.

the owner was talking of some password to be put in my laptop/... can i get that password.. so that once i come to my room i will be able to surf the net..i have not yet got the net ...i will get it soon.

is there any chance by which i get that password.. owner is getting a unlimited plan so.. no problem in downloading.. .only thing is that i want to surf in my room.. which d owner is against... is there any software by whic hi can get the password>>

Look, if he gives u the password to surf near him, there's not going to be a different password for when u're in ur room. There's only ONE password regardless of range or location on one AP.

Now, if u want to hack into someone's network, google. No one's going to help u hack here.

I fully agree :hap5:

but one of my imp quetsions is that What is the signal strenth of wifi??? how far is the strenth?? 20 m or 50 M..

For god's sake, just take the lappy to ur room and see if it catches the signal or not! If it does, good. If it doesn't, u're not going to upgrade the hotel hardware, are you?

I might be sounding harsh, but the solution for ur problem is right there!!!

Edit: There's no definite range for wi-fi. Depends on hardware, location, walls etc. Lotsa variables.

Dude, ask him to start wifi, give you the password, start using it.

Take it to your room and see if it still works, since its a hotel and ur on borderline of the range of a router, no one here can tell you..

And we dont speak abt hacking wifi here, but tis possible depending on the protection he's using.

I agree with Naga! if the wi-fi is on, u dont need the password to see whether it'll come to ur room or not!

Just check the signal strength from ur room! if u r using vista typically 2-3 bars(signal strength) are more than enough!

and while in the room try to point the back of the screen(lid) towards the wi-fi access point! cuz that is where ur receiver is located!:)

once ur sure of the signal strength just ask him for the pw and surf away!:D

OT - Acc to me this isn't a foolproof method! i was in a hotel in Bangalore and they had those cards where u had to buy 1hr or 12hr access cards! they had "userid" and "password" on em!
and the hotel wi-fi actually used some access service where u could access net only after providing the userid and pass on the hotel site(as the wi-fi was not protected but opened only the hotel site!) i thought i'd have to obtain a wep key or somethin! now that was somethin!:)

owner has put the password himself... now how to know that password?? im using vista premeium.. and wifi is on... nd password is saved in it..

as in... he didn't tell u the password(WEP key)??

are u able to access the internet (open webpages and stuff)from ur room!??

yes i am able to surf from my room.....\\nd d owner put the password in my lappy....so how to get the password??
