Nintendo's Wii outsells Sony's PS3

Nintendo Co. Ltd. sold 476,000 units of its new Wii video game console in the United States in November, more than twice the number of PlayStation 3s sold by rival Sony Corp., as the two consoles debuted mid-month, research group NPD said Friday.

Sony's PS3 sales came in at 197,000.

Microsoft Corp. sold 511,000 units of its Xbox 360 in November, according to NPD.

That console, released just over a year ago, is locked in a three-way battle with the PlayStation 3 and Wii, which were released in mid-November amid speculation over whether Sony can maintain its dominance over the global console market after selling more than 106 million PlayStation 2 units globally.

The Japanese electronics maker had said it would ship 400,000 PS3s into the United States for its launch, but there has been broad industry speculation that the company had fallen far short of its initial goal.

Nintendo has said it expects to ship 4 million Wiis worldwide by December 31, double the number of PS3s promised by Sony. Late last month, Nintendo said it sold 600,000 Wiis in the first eight days after its November 19 debut.

Microsoft, which gets most of its sales from North America, is targeting global Xbox 360 shipments of 10 million by year end.

Nintendo's Wii retails for $250; Sony's top-line PS3 retails $600; and Microsoft's Xbox 360 retails for $400.

NPD is still calculating historical console sales data.

NPD said overall video game-related sales were $1.7 billion in November.

Sales of games that run on consoles and portable players were $804 million. Hardware sales were $771 million, fueled by consoles and Nintendo's DS hand-held device, which sold 918,000 units in November.

NPD receives data representing approximately two-thirds of the U.S. retail sales and makes projections for the remainder of the market based on a sampling of U.S. consumers.

I'm just gonna copy and paste this every time now :

Wii is outselling Ps3 because of 1 main reason : AVAILABILITY.

Wii exists in much larger quantities than the Ps3 now. You will sell what you end up making, how much you end up making, and in this scenario, Sony's having a hard time producing as many Ps3's as there are Wii's currently, so when you have more Wii's to sell than Ps3's, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out which one will sell more.

Things have gone as expected. Nintendo always manages to sell well at launch time. It's what follows that's really terrifying. Nintendo is the worst at keeping up the momentum.

Have seen some game trailers for teh ps3...if those release anytime soon...wii can kiss itself goombye....

I bet that consumed a better part of your cranial resources to concoct, eh?

I agree that the Wii will definitely do better than PS3 cos of greater availability.

I also contend that even if that were not the case, it might have done pretty well. The Wii has been hyped like nothing before. And the best part is, unlikely a retarded Sony hyping itself, Nintendo has let everyone else hype them. That way no one has any negative feelings against them.

and coupled with availability is the shortage of titles for PS3 at the moment... and the huuuuge price margin between the two

Now we can safely assume that PS3 will easily miss its march launch date in india.

I don't know abt the india launch but I can definitely say tht they are gonna stick to their Euro launch..why do you ask..AHEM!!

Sony president Ryoji Chubachi says 2 million PS3s worldwide by the end of 2006 and 6 million by March is "within our reach"; PS3 production issues could be history.

It's no secret that Sony has had some manufacturing issues with its coveted PlayStation 3. The main culprit has been the production of the system's blue laser diode, which has caused shortages of the PS3 in the US and Japan and a delay of the console's release in Europe.

But if Sony president Ryoji Chubachi's recent words are any indication, it seems Sony has ironed out the bumps in the PS3's manufacturing process. Not only that, but Sony may meet its projection of having 2 million PS3s shipped worldwide by the end of 2006 and 6 million worldwide by March 2007, when the console is scheduled to launch in Europe.

Speaking before the media in Tokyo, Chubachi said, "It is true that it took us some time to bring the PS3 to mass production as blue laser availability worked as a bottleneck. But 2 million and 6 million are within our reach," according to Reuters.

Industry watchers had expressed concern that Sony wouldn't be able to meet those numbers after launch sales results indicated that the company missed its initial shipment targets. However, Chubachi's comments seem to indicate that things are now on track for the electronics giant.

Sony isn't exactly having a good time with its products is it...the vaio batteries are blowing , the PS3 gets outsold by the wii now.,...

There are quite a lot of reasons actually, the first one being Price, the second being availability and the third being the fact that the wii is low on eye candy but high on fun, a seasoned gamer would swear by the PS3 but someone looking for some family type fun would buy the wii this christmas and that makes more sense...the controller is pretty cool .... yea it does have its strap problems and all those injuries but then the fact is right now the Wii is more fun and thats the simple reason it outsold the PS3, in the end the one thing that matters in a game is whether u had fun or not....and the wii is makin people go wheeeee :P at least for the moment :D

After seeing the prices that the PS3 was selling for on Ebay, I feel the PS3 would've sold well even if it costed 800$. Sony could've charged that price and maybe even higher and gotten away with it thanks to Bluray.

^^ hmm so you saying the bluray drive is worth the price ?

Stupid Sony tactics, of mkting their own devices IMO. May backfire big time, and hamper their Playstation franchisee...

...blu ray is probably the reason the ps3 isnt selling...its the costliest component of the PS3...if there is one reason the price of the PS3 is high ... its because of the blur ray drive...

If you must know, I think the PS3 is worth nothing right now but technically speaking, it's definitely the best price you could ever expect for a piece of hardware like that.

The PS3 isn't selling? You need to get new sources, man. Bluray is indirectly affecting PS3 sales thanks to the fact that it takes longer to produce the PS3 with it. I'll also accept that gaming purists who are looking towards the PS3 purely for gaming purposes might be turned off by Bluray. Probably why Sony made it mandatory to produce all games on Bluray discs even though it's clearly not required.

If sony didn't include the overhyped blu ray with ps3 , they could have produced far more units by now. They should have done what MS did -----should have offered blu ray as an add on option.

See, the thing is that Sony is also trying to promote Bluray and they saw the PS3 as a perfect opportunity to do that.
