90K+ Will I like macOS?

Don't want to hijack this thread, but have been looking at Snapdragon Elite series ARM coz it's the future, until X86 can really match it. But none have the in-house architecture, like Apple, which gives them the edge. Others will always end up catching up to Apple on terms of performance no matter whatever tags they put.

As stated, disappointed with the step-motherly treatment by snapdragon by releasing only few models. Maybe they themselves not sure how it performs and PR can go only so far. I was looking for some cheaper Elite processors, but there's only one for now. And the cost is just too much. Maybe economies of scale could bring it down, but the time gap will be there.

I did see AMD Ryzen AI SoC's on X86 architecture. Atleast if they released it, it would have given some idea how it performs.

Given how AI is becoming a jargon and the need for more ram for on-device AI tasks rather than relying on pathetic net speeds in India, even 32 gb would seem to get outdated in a few years!!

This is not at all OT. I have bookmarked several SD elite laptops for some time. I wished we got a few 32gb variants in India but tough luck. I was extremely disappointed, rather infuriated with the Surface lineup which made it to India. MS wants Apple money for their unproven platform.

Apple has all customizations and SKUs available in India, unlike Microsoft, who chose to release only a few SKUs.

Talking about bookmarks, I was eyeing this for several months now:

32GB model costs 1.1L in Dubai. Going there next week, was planning to get it but will hold it for now.

I am holding Qualcomm stock but still, I would suggest not to pay a lot for Snapdragon Elite laptops yet. If I am desperate for a laptop and if it is for AI tasks, I would just go with one that has AMD's Ryzen Ai chip and nvidia GPU if I have money. It is a very very safe bet.


Apple: Bring a major technological shift, arm twists everyone to switch by making current one look bad.
Google: Brings major technological shift, dedicatedly works till it almost is ready for prime. Then they dig up space in their graveyard and shove it in.
Microsoft: Brings major technological shift and quickly loses interest, lets Apple or other company go through. They did this with Windows Phone and doing this with WoA. They suddently seem to lose interest in pushing the marketing and shoving it down everyone's throat.

That's the biggest problem with Windows on ARM.

Moreover, MS has shot itself in the foot by going exclusive with Qualcomm. I would have loved to see windows running natively on Apple Silicon.

As long as you keep in mind that its a different OS.
If an iOS user starts to expect Android to be just another skin for iOS then they would end up hating droid (and vice versa)

eg for your query on viewing pictures, the easiest thing to do for a pic (or mostly any content file for that matter) is to just press the spacebar to invoke preview.. Which I personally find to be way more elegant than having to double click and invoke Irfanview or similar

Or the bunch of complaints here about the “maximize” button going full screen.
No one ever decreed that the top right button has to be maximize a window. Mac OS uses spaces instead. Why expect it to be another windows again?
Why not start using cmd tab/ cmd ~ as well as ctrl up/ ctrl down for windows navigation instead? Which i again find way more elegant/ flexible than alt tab/ win tab model on windows

The four key things I think any new Mac OS user coming from windows needs to keep in mind

1) The system is meant to be left always on - drop your habit of shutting down your PC else you would be leaving one of the best parts of the switch on the table.
Close lid, head out.. Open lid and resume. the time between reboots/shutdown should normally be in months and not days , let alone daily

2) spotlight (cmd + space) is your best friend. its not the same as windows start search.
once you get used to using spotlight for everything, you will hate going back to desktop app shortcuts or even browsing through hierarchical folders to achieve your intended goal of opening an app or a file

3) You have likely used windows for years or decades depending on your age. By now you probably know every single workaround/ tweak/ mechanism to get around a roadblock.
Certain things will stump you in the first few months here- google foo will almost always get you out.
Similarly The shortcuts as you can imagine are very different. It will take you some time to get used to them

4) If you are familiar with linux or with the CLI in general, creating advanced workflows on Mac OS will be very easy for you. There are several In built scripting options. try and use them. Some of the tools are very GUI user friendly (shortcuts, and automator) , some aren’t (Apple scripting tool)
But a combination of GUI and classic scripting will help you achieve a lot of advanced automations very quickly
